Even if the extended version is better, this was still a disappointing ending to perhaps the most disappointing PR season ever, at least in proportion to what the anniversary season should have been.

Well, I've now seen "The Legendary Battle: Extended Edition," which is a 75-minute (counting commercials) cut of "The Wrath" and "Legendary Battle." They've added about an equal amount of material to both episodes, extending and adding scenes. The main extension I noticed in "The Wrath" was that the sequence with the "New Powers" (i.e. the pre-MMPR outfits) was extended. I think the farewell to Orion at the beginning may have been a bit longer too. There must've been other stuff, but I couldn't tell what was new and what I was just forgetting.

In part 2, the main additions do not involve the past Rangers, but they're still significant improvements. The action's been fleshed out with a lot more material from the Gokaiger finale. For one, in the rooftop battle with Mavro's lieutenant, there's a sequence where Orion changes to the Green Mighty Morphin Ranger and gives his Dragon Shield to Troy (in MMPR Red mode). But the other main addition is that, as in the Gokaiger finale, Mavro actually survives the destruction of his ship and has a final confrontation with the team on the ground, in which they pour on a ton of different Legendary Modes, including various enhanced super modes (incorrectly called Battlizer modes). It's still just as awkward that the Legendary Rangers are nowhere to be seen for this, but it does smooth the transition a bit, for once Mavro is finally defeated, he says "You may have defeated me, but you'll never defeat my army," leading to the reveal of the advancing X-Borgs. So it makes the threat feel a bit more connected to Mavro.

Oh, and the team gets a new transformation sequence just before fighting Mavro, where we see them in their Gokaiger/Super Mega costumes without helmets, then they strike their Ranger poses and announce themselves, and their helmets materialize on their heads. That was kinda cool.

As for the past Rangers, very little new material is added. Tommy gets another line or two with the kid he rescues from the car at the beginning, telling him he could grow up to be a superhero. They all get shots of getting ready to put their helmets back on before the battle, but only one of them gets a new line here -- but it's pretty awesome. Karone, who had no lines in the original cut, looks at the face of her Pink Galaxy Ranger helmet, smiles, and says "I love being a Ranger." Then she looks at the camera and very briefly turns into Astronema, then back to Karone, before putting the helmet on. That's so cool it almost makes up for the shoddy handling of the rest.

But really, that's about it. Nothing that I could see was added to the fight itself, at least not involving the returning actors. Tommy still doesn't do a darn thing in the actual fight.

So it still has a lot of the same problems the shorter edition had. I think they could've restructured the climax with some careful editing and voice dubbing, making it look as though the army was backing up Mavro and the Legendary Rangers were holding off the army while Megaforce dealt with the emperor. They could've cut in more shots of the Green MMPR Ranger and dubbed in some lines for Jason David Frank to make Tommy the leader of the fight against the army. There were enough mini-climaxes in the Mavro battle (where Mavro seems to fall but then turns out to have survived) that it would've facilitated cutting back and forth. So it could've been better all around. Still, the Extended Edition is a distinct improvement over the shorter versions. I'm a little more satisfied about the finale now.

Those real world pics, one can see just how petite she really is. Interesting how TV tends to make people look taller

    On another note:
Apparently there is now a red ranger balloon in the Macy's Day Parade

You should see her on Flashpoint, where she pulled a five-year stint as what you guys call a SWAT officer. She was so tiny compared to the big guys on that cast, and yet she was more than able to keep up. It was quite fun. :)

Oh, Amy Jo Johnson was amazing on Flashpoint. She's an incredibly gifted actress as well as incredibly gorgeous, and I've always regretted that she didn't get the stardom she deserved. (I always wished that she, rather than her Felicity co-star Jennifer Garner, had gotten the lead role on Alias.) Although she's still had one of the most successful careers of any ex-Ranger.

I did catch an ep or two of Flashpoint. And while I had no problems whatsoever with Garner on Alias I have to agree that Johnson is a very gifted actress who deserves more success.

I saw the extended finale. It was a complete waste of the cameos, but I'm such a fan I could help but enjoy seeing that my favorite Power Rangers team (Lost Galaxy) tied with Turbo the most returning cameos (with Leo, Karone and Damon for LG and technically Tommy, Cassie and Tj for Turbo, albiet from different versions of the team, and not using those powers in the episode). The final battle was ok, but I liked it better in Gokaiger.

I was a bit annoyed by some of the rangers shown in the final battle that don't make sense. I really wonder who was in the Red Turbo and Zeo suits, and the Pink/Green Turbo and Zeo suits also couldn't both be there, based on who had those powers. I'm not saying that was "fixable", but it was on my mind while watching. I really wish they could have justified the awesome Legendary Zord Team up (Gokaiger had actual suits remade of several of the previous megazords, including the original MMPR megazord, to fight with the current one) but they probably couldn't justify the older zords like they could the powers. I liked seeing the never used Sentai suits again, thought, and I liked that they got names.

Overall, like the rest of the season this wasn't very good, but I did get a kick out of see ing the cameos, even if they didn't accomplish much.

That was Go-Busters vs Gokaiger (And Kyoryuger vs Go-Busters) that had the remade Daizujin suit. Daizyujin in the Sentai 199 movie was stock footage. The 199 movie had suits for Victory Robo, GoseiGreat, GokaiOh, EngineOh, ShinkenOh, GaoKing, GekiTohja, MagiKing and Dekaranger Robo

That seems quite promising. No recycling of the Samurai/Megaforce theme :)

    :alienblush:

I forgot about that. Still, I'm assuming they have the rights to that footage anyway, so it might have been possible to use it. Either way, I thought the scene was cool when I saw it, and it would have been neat to see the old MMPR zord again in a PR series.

That's pretty good. It's very different from the basic MMPR/Samurai/Megaforce theme, with pretty nice lyrics, but manages to incorporate the original MMPR refrain in a way that feels fresh and fits organically into the new theme.

Can someone explain to me why we have titles like Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger with "zyu"? It bugs me because, yes I know that Super Sentai uses a lot of English words for names, but you can't string together "zzz", "yuh", and "ooo" in real Japanese! Heck, they even pronounce that syllable on screen as "獣"/"じゅう"/"jū".

But note that the same kind of pattern appears twice in Kyoryu. Those are Yōon, essentially contractions of syllable pairs, with ki + yo becoming kyo, zi + yu becoming zyu, etc. (Note that the hiragana you have written there are zi + yu + u, three syllables.) But the zyu contraction has been slurred over time into sounding more like ju, so that's how it's rendered in the modern Hepburn romanization scheme, which is geared toward representing pronunciations in terms of English phonology. But in other romanization systems like Nihon-shiki and Kunrei-shiki, which are more faithful to Japanese phonetics, it's transliterated as zyu.

So Zyuranger could be rendered in Hepburn as Jūrenjā or in Kunrei-shiki as Zyuurenzyaa. I suppose the Zyu- spelling might've been chosen for aesthetics.

I finally saw the final episode today (the extended version on Nick.com), and I have to agree that it was overall disappointing. I did enjoy the first scene with the past rangers helping out. I knew we were going to see them at the final battle, but I had no I idea we'd be seeing them like this. Other than that part, the only part I liked was when all of the past rangers showed up to help. Unfortunately, the battle itself was extremely disappointing. Not only was it was way too short, it only involved them sweeping up a bunch of expendable footsoldiers.

One other thing that really disappointment me was the complete lack of explanation for Troy's prophetic dreams. How was he able to see the future, and why?

Good. I was hoping it wouldn't just be another minor variant of the same theme. And speaking of them not reusing the same tired formula, it seems the morphing call is "Unleash the Power", as opposed to "Go Go Dino Charge" (though "It's Morphin Time" is also said in the preview).

Good point. They set up that mystery in the early episodes and then pretty much neglected to do anything with it. Just one more thing to be unsatisfied with.

Hmm... On second thought, "Try to break the chains that divide" is kind of a mixed/oxymoronic metaphor. Don't chains generally attach things to each other rather than dividing them?

Oh, well. It's still a lot more coherent than the lyrics to those incidental songs from MMPR back in the day. I'm still trying to make some sense out of "You'll come calling, slowly crawling/ Attitude defined/ Take and conquer, is your honor/ Weak of soul and mind." Or "And we keep dreamin' of a world/ Where all that's good so we were told." Okay, that one's at least comprehensible, but it's really reaching for a rhyme.

I still remember "No one's going to ever take you down!"

Then after the Power Rangers ARE beaten down over the course of the seasons they take those lyrics out lol

It didn't leak, it was officially released through the app.

I like it a lot, I was getting sick of the same theme after four years.
