I think the NFL should adopt a rule that a team cannot make the playoffs without a winning record. If the division winner is 7-9, they pick another wild card team instead. I like unbalanced schedules and choosing division winners because it helps encourage rivalries, but a team should not be able to skate by being awful and then go on to win it all.

Very happy, another business-like performance by the Patriots. Stomping one of the best teams in the NFC, not slowed down much by (one of? or the?) best defenses going this season. Looked very calm and in control in this game, very nice.

Big test next week, Pats vs. Packers could be an early Superbowl matchup, or at least a decent probability. And in Green Bay, always fun.

I'm coming around on this train of thought. We could possibly see a bullshit NFC South team take away a playoff spot from an 11 win team that would be considered a "third" wild card team.

Playoff seeding and inclusion should be record, strength of schedule, common opponents. A division winner automatically gets a playoff spot, and I think that's wrong. In 2008, the 11-5 Brady-less Patriots got left out for the 8-8 Chargers. This year's equivalent could come from the NFC South.

But it should show you how absurd I find this situation if I prefer the Cowboys to get in. Don't get me wrong, I don't want some kind of college football selection committee evaluating things. I'm fine with a 10-6 division winner making it over an 11-5 team that failed to win its division. That's a reward for beating your rivals and winning the division. But if you're so pathetic that you can't even win more than you lose, you don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

The old Sanchez has showed up at times but it really hasn't been enough to derail the team. Sanchez seems to thrive in this offense. The Cowboys defense is also not the Packers defense. The Cowboys are ok at stopping the run but they just can't get to the QB.

I kinda feel like they should keep the division format simply for scheduling purposes, but have the playoff teams determined by record.

Has Vick played his last NFL game? He put in a rather pathetic effort tonight, such that they may go back to Geno Smith for the rest of the season. And he doesn't even seem good enough anymore to be a solid backup. Maybe he'll just retire at the end of the season.

Even that'll water down rivalries because you don't play them enough for scheduling alone to matter. Maybe that's OK, I don't know. I'd rather not go that far as a general rule.

I was never crazy about Michael Vick - I always felt that he was overrated as one of those "mobile quarterbacks," which is kind of a euphemism (remember the "game manager" euphemism?-- who comes up with those??) for a guy who makes an exciting play or pulls a rabbit out of his hat now and again but is not going to win you a championship. Check the 2010 playoff game against GB. As to the Jets, they'll almost certainly blow the whole thing to kingdom come and start over again. Some teams just can't get it right. They've really fallen from 2009-2010.
