You're jumping the gun a little on this one; the release date isn't until December 30th. The December book (releasing, as usual, at the end of November) is actually Foul Deeds Will Rise, which has a review thread already. Might be worth deleting this one and making it again in a month.

I don't mind it hanging around, the end of December isn't that far away!

Actually, that's the Star Trek novel for January 2015. As Thrawn pointed out, December's novel is The Original Series: Foul Deeds Will Rise, the street date for which hasn't even arrived yet!

As Foul Deeds Will Rise comes out November 25 while The Missing comes out December 30, I generally consider them to be November and December novels, respectively.

Say, does anyone know why it is that so many books, Star Trek novels included, have publisher-given electronic and supposed brick and mortar release dates in the ending days of a month, but half the time in catalogs, etc they are designated as being novels for the following month? Whatever is the point of this practice?

Their publication month is technically the month following the day of their release, thus the month that they enjoy their time on the shelves of your local bookstore and the month in which it is most likely to be picked up by the book-reading public. Therefore, Foul Deeds Will Rise is the December book, and The Missing is the January book.

As for the purpose of the early street dates? My guess would be to get a jump on the sales for their respective months. I would think one of the authors would have a much better idea of the marketing side of things than I, however. Perhaps one of them could weigh in?

I know that for magazines, the cover date is essentially a "display until" date. A November issue will stay on the stands through November, even though it comes out in August. So it's sort of like the "Sell by" date on groceries. Not quite the same for books, since theoretically they can stay on the shelf indefinitely, but I guess it's similar in that the listed date isn't really a release date.

Perhaps it's a holdover from the early days of publishing when shipping took longer?

I think the same way. I think the month the book is released is that month's Star Trek book even if it is released on the last Tuesday of the month. This is officially being released in 2014. I don't consider that 2015.

Excuse me?? CAPTAIN Ro Laren?? CMO BEVERLY CRUSHER?? Of the Enterprise??

    WTF??

And what is that station? It doesn't look Cardassian.

Elias Vaughn just killed his Mirror Universe counterpart (where I left off, anyway) And Kira was captain. Stuff like the above si pushing me more and more to read the TOS novels exclusively.

^What's so shocking about change? Just because you've missed a few books doesn't mean the changes are wrong.

There was a bit of a disconnect after warpath, which has been well discussed, but the fall of ds9, and the new station has been well documented since.

Who do we have on ds9 from the relaunch? now - Quark, Ro, Prynn, Nog when he's not gala anything around on other ships and secret missions. O'Brien has returned too. Hopefully we'll catch up with Kira and Odo too.

Pulaski moved fast from the Fall to having her own ship.

I have to admit I'm surprised that Crusher has remained for more than a few minutes, being away from Rene. I wonder if it's a way to get TNG readers across. I have to admit the DS9 book in the fall was a bit slow with the whole wormhole vision part, I hope it pays off big time. The Bashir novel (COL?) on the other hand did nothing to keep my blood pressure down.

Can I make a plea and never have Garak visit DS9?

As I recall from the last TNG novel, Crusher was only going to be on DS9 for a few months, until a permanent Chief Medical Officer was assigned. Sure, as twice former head of Starfleet Medical, Crusher has the qualifications to easily take on the position for a short term, Starfleet is going to want someone with about the same level of experience that Crusher has in order to replace her and Bashir. As Picard said back in "Emissary", Bajor is now on "the map", and it has been for close to 20 years now. This is not going to be anything like the original plan for DS9 20 years ago where it was a "back water" world that a recent Academy graduate could be sent to and work as the CMO.

Excuse me? CAPTAIN Kira Nerys? And who's this Elias Vaughn guy? I don't remember any Vaughn on the TV show!

You have missed many DS9 books. Go find all the books written after the end of DS9 (the TV series) and have a read and you'll then be up to date. Of course, there are some Typhoon Pact books and The Fall series to read as well. You have a LOT to read.

If you don't understand the changes in DS9, go read the books you've missed. Please don't come here and complain about the changes. They are all documented in the books you've missed.

Oh yeah, I know. I was gently teasing the person that I was quoting that was objecting to the changes that had happened since they stopped reading, by highlighting that some of the things they were used to were already significant changes from where the DS9 finale had left off in the first place; that's why I mimicked the structure of their post and only referred to things that poster mentioned that had been introduced in the Litverse, and why I had the :p smiley in there.

I'm sure DTI should investigate him. We never hear of him for 35 years, then all of a sudden he crops up in every major event in trek history.

    Perhaps he's the doctor?
