Well, if Moffatt will be writing it, you know there will be a cheap gag of the week. Look, he didn't stop that "Doctor? Doctor Who?" for a long time.

When did he stop? :guffaw:

I'm sure there was one the other week.

The last "Doctor Who?" line was in fact just last week in Dark Water, with Missy talking about "the doctor" and then the Doctor asks "Doctor Who?" Missy then shouts "Doctor Chang!"

I don't care. It doesn't matter to me one little bit whether the Doctor is a guy or girl. What does matter is that they get in the very best possible actor or actress to play the role.

Irish Woman, with bright Ginger hair, as the next Doctor. That should make the fanbase freak out.

Imagine the fan meltdown if he did, indeed, revisit a "old favorite" face - that of a girl who waited...
Just for the freak out, it would be so worth doing.

Or do something similar to what Romana did and have the Doctor trying on different bodies: Amy, River, Rose, Martha, Donna.

And what if the Doctor regenerates - Farscape-style - into two distinct Doctors, one female, one male, both genuine incarnations of the Doctor, that we follow through one or more seasons?

The most depressing thing about the past week (and thankfully it doesn't really apply to this forum) is seeing just how retrograde, transphobic, homophobic and misogynistic the opinions of a vast swathe of Doctor Who fans are.

Even if you just ignore the frothing bile, comments like "The Doctor can't became a woman becasue they'd have to change the name of the series to 'Nurse Who'" (because aparently we're living in the 18th century) make me want to put my head in my hands and weep.

But "nurse" makes so much sense! After all, there are no female doctors except for a few uppity know-it-alls who only do it to undermine the mens and steal their precious bodily fluids. Women! Know your place!

It really is amazing how different things can be in a bubble (GallifreyBase). On this forum and a couple other Forums, there's little or no objection to it, and real life fans I know have no problem with. The Media apparently hasn't even bothered making a big deal out of it.

I can just imagine what a fool that person made of himself patting himself on the back for how clever he thought the "Nurse Who" "joke" was.

I want Capaldi to have a good run, at least another two or three series before he leaves. But when he regenerates, why not? In 1982 when I was a naive 19 year old and first watched episodes featuring Tom Baker, I might have balked at the concept, but the world and (hopefully) I have changed. I'm all for it.

Of more interest to me will her wardrobe. Not that it should really matter; it's just idle curiosity. Will it be something "gender neutral" that either sex might wear without someone raising a dubious eyebrow, or will it have elements some would debate as strictly "feminine", articles of clothing that would bother some people to see a man wear?

Sincerely,

Bill

Unfortunately, the "Nurse Who" line is actually very old. It started at least as far back as the late 80s when regenerating the Doctor into a female was one of many ideas suggested to save the show when it was on its last legs.

Though, I guess anyone with that kind of attitude today likely isn't with the times and is still unhealthily attached to the past. Shouldn't surprise me they're using jokes which are nearly thirty years old.

Given that Osgood is cosplaying the 11th Doctor in the finale I'd say his clothes are already gender neutral!

Well, when it comes to wardrobe, if The Doctor regenerated into a female Doctor who decided she wanted to pull a certain technicolor coat out of storage, that's one thing that would make me embrace a female Doctor immediately ;) It would have to be the classic coat, though, not the bland blue coat from some of the covers of audio stories I've seen.

I may not be a fan of a female Doctor, but "Nurse Who" is pretty insulting and stupid.

I'm ready for it. It really depends, as usual, on the writing and performances. If both those are good, yes, it would be a good thing.

However, I suspect that the next Doctor will be male. Yes, it's ever more clear that Time Lords can change genders. However, in the real world, Moffat is unlikely to be running DW when it comes to picking the next Doctor. And, a new show runner probably won't want to start with a riskier choice.

(If Moffat is still around to pick the next Doctor, he's probably stayed far too long or Capaldi has stayed far too short!)

Well, there is the old cliché that women can pull off wearing men's clothes better than men can pull off wearing women's clothes.
