Dragon Age - Discussion Thread

It looks like the Dragon Age Keep hit open beta yesterday.

Had a quick go of it and had a couple of hiccups with one of my imports but those bits seemed easy enough to correct.

However, it also doesn't seem to take quite a few of the events in DAO into account (or at least let you edit them).

I'll probably have a longer look at it later.

I got into the closed beta a few months back, but obviously couldn't say anything because of the NDA.

I don't mind saying that I was disappointed that save importing couldn't be a thing for a number of reasons. Yet, while it was a hassle loading up old save files and trawling though codex and journal entries, it really didn't take all that long to accurately reproduce my primary warden's world state.

They are still in the process of adding new plot flags to the tapestry, so if there's one you really feel should be there then you could use the beta feedback tool to request it. However, it's a safe bet that anything that may directly impact the upcoming DAI has already been implemented, so until the inevitable DLC or 'Dragon Age 4' it's not exactly a priority.

On the one hand, the no import thing smacks of sheer laziness/incompetence.

On the other hand, do I really want to have to suffer through Dragon Age 2 multiple times again to try out different world states?

No, no I do not. :p

Well, I've figured what one of the hiccups was.

On my particular setup, it prefers IE to Firefox and wasn't giving any of the options for The Tower, Witch Hunt amongst others.

That looks a little better now:)

Not sure if it's still the case but during the closed beta we were advised that Chrome is the optimal browser to use. So if you have trouble with Firefox or Internet Exploder then it might be worth trying that instead.

To be fair there were a number of notorious import bugs between DAO & DA2 and from what we've been told, several plotflags that *will* impact DAI are one's that the previous save file never tracked in the first place, so it was never going to be a smooth process.

Thankfully, you only have to set your main world state *once* and any others you're free to just play around with the combinations without having to spend literally hundreds of hours on replays.

Actually, it's a very elegant solution in concept, given the generational shift that happened inbetwixt DA2 and DA:I.

It definitely beats (again, in concept) the busted-ass import in ME3, that didn't properly import your ME1/ME2 save if you didn't change your Shepard's appearance between ME1 and ME2.

For Firefox, one thing I noticed was that mine had just updated after I ran Keep for the first time. Under 32, it was missing some items. Under 33, it just didn't like it at all. Seems to be a script error, but I've got a fair few browsers to experiment with.

As for the idea of the keep, it works for me. Sooner or later someone will probably have chucked together a saved game creator like they did for DA2.

I know I've got plenty of characters to run through already, but chucking together ones with just one change will probably follow.

Played around with The Keep for a while, I really like it. It saves me a shit-ton of time since my OCD would usually require me to go back and do "definitive" playthroughs which I now don't have to do ;)

Okay, finally broke down and preordered the Deluxe Edition at GAME UK. I probably won't get to really sink my teeth into it before the holiday break, and even then, it's going to be difficult juggling it with all the other games that have been building up in my backlog.

Sounds good to me too.

Here's my current one.

I'm still trying to decide what my first run through will be. So far, they've been rogues, but I also had a lot of fun with the mage run through

Just tried out The Keep and it's an impressive tool.

Tried to remember every major event choice i made with both games (boy it's been a while, hopefully they may release a full box sometime down the line for PS4) and didn't even start to dabble with the fine choices it has.

Since DA will be definitely the game i buy in November it has stiff competition from Assassin's Creed Unity (though playing Black Flag so much tapped me out of the assassin business for a while) and the PS4 version of GTA 5.

Finally next gen consoles get to have must play titles, the winter won't be boring gamewise.

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased with the Keep. It's actually much more in-depth than I was expecting. There were a lot of seemingly minor choices that I didn't think would be there. This is a nice tool to help people set up their world state in DAI without having to spend dozens of hours setting up everything just how they want it.

I'm pretty pissed off the Keep doesn't import the choices you made in DA1/2. It obviously imports SOMETHING from your profile- why not the most important thing?

Because that information was never stored on the online profiles. Those were just summaries of the characters; name, class origin, race, gender, what equipment/skills/abilities they have and what level they're on.

For a full accounting of your plot flags you'd need your save files, which seems simple enough until you consider that a lot of the install base used consoles, which instantly makes save file transfer tricky, if they even still exist. Aside from that there were a number of import bugs for DAOA & DA2 that incorrectly tripped a whole slew of flags incorrectly and to top it off, a whole bunch of minor flags were never imported into DA2 at all.

Even in the best case scenario, the result would have been that you'd basically have to go through every decision one by one to make sure they're correct. If you're going to do that then you may as well just start over.

Yup. They also stored character portraits/snapshots.

The information linked to your DA/EA-accounts (now merged with their Origin store backend) was basically - for the most part - just metrics used for market research and game development purposes, the nitty gritty details of plot decisions (beyond global metrics such as completion percentages) were stored locally on your gaming platform of choice, as Rev explained.

Yep, I think considering the circumstances of a series continuing on a different platform while continuity is still important, I think they've actually done a reasonable job in making it possible.
