Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII There's one of the Clone Wars novels where Obi-Wan and Bail have an adventure together, as well as the comics where Bail sometimes commanded a Star Destroyer. The Marvel comics also had a flashback issue with Obi-Wan set as some point on a mission for Bail, but already with grey hair (and a black outfit which interestingly enough looks a bit like Luke's ROTJ look) However that's all old EU now, especially the last one which I don't think was ever mentioned or retconned again. Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII If Obi-wan is going to reappear for anything, I hold fast to the idea of a tragic "Seven Samurai meets The Alamo" story featuring the last surviving Jedi and Clone War allies being rounded up by a crippled Mace Windu and a young Rebel in order to provide or set up the nascent Rebellion their first real victory.

I think it'd be awesome to see McGregor's Obi-Wan going up against a fully suited up, OT-style Vader. Because I don't think there's anything saying that he couldn't have temporarily come out of hiding early on to battle Vader, and I always got the impression from ANH that they HAD encountered each other a couple times before then (and that his description of the "twisted and evil" Vader wasn't based simply on hearsay or how Anakin was behaving towards the end, but based on previous encounters he had actually had).

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII And even if they hadn't encountered one another in almost 20 years at the time of the climactic lightsaber duel on the original Death Star, the language Vader used to describe their roles during their previous encounter wasn't incorrect. Anakin had technically graduated to full Jedi Knight and a General commanding Republic troops in the Clone Wars, but he was still young enough to be Obi-Wan's son and he always saw himself as his Master's lesser, always falling short of the power and respect that Obi-Wan and other senior Jedi had and he wanted.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII In a Ryder Windham novelization of the events in A New Hope he explains Old Ben using "Darth" to refer to Vader as a way to momentarily provoke and confuse the Sith Lord during their duel and an attempt to gain the upper hand. The real reason, of course, is that in 1976 and 1977 George hadn't yet decided if Darth Vader was indeed his birth name as used during his career as a Jedi Knight or some title or adopted moniker to hide his past history, but that wouldn't be the first thing he later tried to explain away or retcon.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII Possibly, but remember: the wisest, most powerful, well-trained and highly-skilled Jedi Knights in the entire galaxy were fooled for more than 13 years into not realizing that the Sith Master himself was standing right in front of them and was the Senator from Naboo and then Supreme Chancellor of the Republic. If Luke has gone into hiding he might be distracted by and preoccupied with his own personal safety and survival and not attuned to the tremor in the Force that Palpatine's return would cause. That, or Palpatine masks his return at first in much the same way he masked his true identity from the Jedi during the final years of the Old Republic and Luke doesn't realize it's him at the time.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII Yeah, but my take on the premise is that the conceit is that the Jedi relied on their Force powers too much, and the Sith clouded the Jedi ability to see the future. Being reliant on their Force powers to tip them off must have caused them to lose touch with their common sense.

Bush convinced virtually an entire country to go to war with another one on the premise that they had weapons of mass destruction - when they didn't have them -that cost America and many other countries over $1 trillion. And Palpy was better at deception than Bush ever was.

But when it became clear early on that there was some larger figure at work behind everything, you'd think Palpatine would have become one of the Jedi's chief suspects from the start, and that they would have had someone keep a close eye on his activities (long before they made Anakin do it in ROTS).
