Star Wars: Episode VII: The Nerd Rage Awakens

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

That might be a good explanation in retrospect, but I doubt Lucas really wanted him to seem that untrained. Or want us to think Luke hadn't received any lightsaber training simply because we didn't see it onscreen.

Luke's skill with a lightsaber wasn't needed to turn Anakin, Luke was stupid enough to throw away his lightsaber before facing Palpatine. In the end the important was putting Luke into the position to turn Anakin, it's fairly obvious that Luke had no realy chance of beating Palpatine on his own.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It's great how the last moments of the final confrontation between the Emperor and Luke mirrors Anakin's choice when seeing Mace Windu about to strike down Palpatine almost a quarter-century earlier. In both films Anakin Skywalker must make the crucial decision to save somebody important to him: the first choice led to his conversion to a Sith Lord and a life condemned inside life support armor, the second was his redemption and the rescue of his own son and in the process he fulfilled the Jedi prophecy of the Chosen One.

Whatever we may often think of George's writing and directing, his conscious decision for the themes and many of the events in his films to rhyme across the wide expanse of the Saga was a great and often poignant thing and I'm glad he did it.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Seeing ESB, it might be nice for the sabers to hit things other than other lightsabers and the body. Part of what made ESB's last fight intense was Luke and Vader often missing and damaging parts of the Carbonite freezing room, the vane and the railing.

A lot of the fight also didn't have any score either (Although John Williams did compose music for the scene which was cut from the movie but came with most versions of the soundtrack) which I think helped the atmosphere. Come to think of it most of the OT used minimal score in the lightsaber scenes.POST-ROTJ, it seems to be mostly some kind of epic score like Duel of The Fates or Battle of the Heroes instead.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Hmm, looks like they're doing the ANH thing and only building half of the full-sized Falcon. I'm hoping this is only for this particular scene though, and JJ plans to show off the completed Falcon prop in a few other places in the movie...

And also hopefully they'll remember to CG or paint in the missing radar dish this time. ;)

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

If the radar dish is missing in Episode VII at least we'll all know why.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

It's like I'm an elementary school kid again.

My dad didn't live long enough to see the Prequel Trilogy and my mom passed away before she could share the experiences of new Star Wars films with Luke, Han and Leia in them. When Episode VII premieres I'll be watching it with both of them in my hearts and thanking them for encouraging and sharing my love for that universe and other science fiction and fantasy worlds when I was growing up.

They'll be in my hearts. And knowing my trips to the theater, there'll be way too many Sour Patch Kids and Skittles in my belly.

That's a sweet post. I want the films to be great anyway, obviously, but I really hope you enjoy them in particular.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Thanks much for the kind words. I appreciate that.

I hope we all enjoy Episode VII.

Yeah. I suppose it's possible that it's only a demi-Falcon here, because it's on location and not needed for the scenes in question. Maybe they have the rest of the Falcon for when it's actually needed.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

that new Luke rumor sounds a lot better than the original one. I hope that's true. Though the location filming wouldn't suggest it. We all know Star Wars planets look the same all over the planet dammit!!!

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Yeah, those rumors about Luke are a whole lot better than the earlier ones we heard. I could enjoy seeing that and I hope that if the details about Luke's earlier exploits closer to the end of Return of the Jedi turn out to be true that we see at least some of the results of those efforts. They'd be closer to what we (and the old EU) always saw him doing following the defeat of the Emperor and Darth Vader.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

The link. The details about what they said he was supposed to be doing in the years immediately after Jedi. The original "leak" said he disappeared for 30 years but this would make a lot more sense and more closely resemble the old Expanded Universe.

Which is good for just about everyone because the idea that he'd been missing or in captivity for 30 years was just dumb to the Nth degree and would have seriously hampered the new film.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

I really hope the new rumor is true. Its so much better than the original rumor, and could be a good set up for the movie.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

Really loving that new black X-Wing. Even from way high above, that things looks pretty badass.

And yup, you can actually make out the radar dish positioned on top of the scaffolding on the Falcon now, so that's obviously all they're building of it here. Kind of cool to see that all these years later, they're still only building what they absolutely need to.

Re: New Casting and Story Rumors re: EPISODE VII

When J.J. said they were going to go back to as many of the old filmmaking ways as they could he wasn't kidding. I love seeing all these actual three-dimensional ship props and sets and the more tangible, concrete feel of the production.

I suppose it could always be that Han and Leia haven't seen much of Luke in the last 30 years, with him off training people and studying to become a Master Jedi or whatever. But it's only in the last 10 that he's truly gone missing and no one knows where he is at all.

Yeah, I see two X-wing-like fighters, one light and one dark, and besides their colors I can't tell from that whether they're different types or not.
