Rather than having one of the BoPs decloaking to give them away, I added (a much more subtle amount of) this effect to every ship in the scene, including the Drake.

Then I hate to disappoint you, but I went completely the other way with it :p

Remember those sketches in Archer's Ready room? I did a version of the NX-Refit like that.

Cool :D Could use some white highlights, like the one above.

[edit] And some darker, more defined lines along the edge of the objects.

I don´t know about this contest. I admire everyone who can produce such images, but frankly I see a big quality difference between "fan" artwork and professionally produced art. So far the pictures I have seen here are great as fan artwork but would not make me invest money in the calendar. I think the basic idea is a great one to open the calendar for fan work, maybe one or two illustration - but to fill a whole calendar is probably a very risky choice.

In the end it might not get bought by enough people. I imagine one of the reason is because of money - I am sure the regular artists get much more then 500 bucks. But this could backfire big time.

It will be very interesting to see the outcome, I hope my worries are unsubstantiated.http://dict.leo.org/ende/index_de.h...oc=0&resultOrder=basic&multiwordShowSingle=on

The guys who worked on the ST: 2009 made yearly salaries up to 100,000 dollars per year, so yeah 500 dollars is a pittance really, hell that's a lot less then what I make a week. But that's not the point, the point is recognition, To get one's work noticed. Because maybe, just maybe, A studio will pick you up and you get hired to do what you've wanted to do. That's defiantly not the reality though...

That's just one reason people are doing this contest, It's more then about the money. It's about the fandom and how much we all love trek, and we show our love via fan art. It could also be a way to sharpen your skills as an artist. There are millions of reasons why people want to do this.

As for the whole Calendar being completely full off fan art, sure it's a risk. But people will buy it to support Trek, and her fans who have put themselves out there.

No one has mentioned that it's a shakeup of the standard format because of the 50th of Trek. The reason why they want only canon ships and only fan submissions is because its honoring 50 years of television and movie history and the massive fanbase spawned from those years. I imagine they're going to be selecting a variety of hero ships from ENT, TOS, and TNG eras, including Enterprises, captured in beauty shots.

FarShot: That is one way to interpret it, but I highly doubt this is the reason for the project. The calendar has just recently been abandoned by the original publisher and is now handled by someone else, who is probably trying to cut down costs to make up for the licensing fees. I doubt that CBS has anything to say in that regard other then to approve the pictures.

I worry that, aside from the quality of the pictures themselves, we will see 12 single ships in front of a starscape, which is rather boring to me. What I liked about the calendar so far is that some of the artists tried to arrange the picture so that they tell a story.

That's a distinct possibility. I myself have struggled (and perhaps failed, at least at first glance) to provide a sense of perspective and depth as well as tell a story, as is the hallmark of SotL.

However, I'm limited to my single 3D asset. I'm hoping to see a great many pencil and paint entries, where the artists, unrestrained by GC resources, created a rich, elaborate epic using traditional means.

As for the money, it's never the reason I enter these contests. It's about fun and exposure.

[edit]
I've submitted my entry! Best of luck to all the contestants!

Well, entered my first this morning. My second (and better one) I'll slip in under the wire tomorrow AM.

Well due to RL, I'm not going to make it, but here was my entry, or at least the pencil work for it (USS Armstrong, and Drake if I am not mistaken on the names):

Man, now I'm really wishing I had thought to add the Armstrong to my image. I only have the Drake (and cloaked Birds of Prey) a second visibile ship would have gone a long way toward adding a sense of depth, which my submission rather lacks, until you notice the Klingons.

[edit]
I'm temped to try to add it by tomorrow and submit again, but one day is just not going to be enough time to model and texture a new ship, to say nothing of integrating it into the image. Oh well...

[edit] Since the Armstrong is just a Galaxy class kitbash... still pondering. What are the rules on cutting up screenshots from the show and rearranging in photoshop? Anyone know?

[edit] After some fiddling I've come to the conclusion that I simply can't do it in the time remaining, no matter the method. Have to let it go... >sigh<

Hey guys, long time no see, so I made the deadline yesterday with a digital painting that I was able to pull off in a day to meet the deadline. I wasn't going to enter when I got clarification from Doug Drexler as to the canon requirements as it made the original piece I was working on moot. :( But I got one done under the wire and submitted it at 4 am this morning. But seeing the competition I am going to be up against in here, I am not expecting to see much from it aside from a painting for my portfolio.

Hi Adam! Did you catch the bit above about mentioned but unseen ship classes? Might be the way to get your original piece in. (Don't you have 'till midnight?) Either way, I'd love to see it :)

[edit]
Nevermind. The contest site now redirects to the root. Good thing I didn't wait to submit till today!!!
