According to the articles tracking development of TNG in Starlog at the time (by David Gerrold), that was originally the spelling of his name. Maybe you read the article and remembered that spelling.

I'd never seen those aticles before - my only knowledge of TNG prior to its UK premiere was reading the back of a season 1 rental VHS cassette in some shop.

I guess I must have misread the original opening titles.

I thought it was Ryker too ~ it just seemed more 'space-age hero'

Anyway, I might try it for a while, just to see how it feels.

It'll be like Opal Fruits becoming Starburst, Jif becoming Cif, Norwich Union becoming Aviva, Windscale becoming Sellafield...
