I heard this was really good. A kid's movie with challenges a real kid would actually face, no gimmicks, no monsters, no fantasy

I think we're not speaking about the same movie. Les Enfants du Paradis is a classic from the 40's.

You're right.. the movie I'm thinking of is called "Children of Heaven"..

The titles are close and this film is well-liked. Please check Ebert's review...

I'm glad to see someone else like Generations. I know it's an unpopular thing around here...

Generations tried to be intelligent in a way some of the other ST movies didn't. There are a number of clever little touches. Of course, there's some pretty big plot problems, but for me the film is a very enjoyable experience.
