What shorthand do you use?
STD was funny for a couple of weeks. Now I just use DSC. I sometimes Disco as a prefix when discussing the DiscoKlingons or Discoprise, so everyone knows which version I'm talking about.
In-universe abbreviation doesn't make it "canon" tv show abbreviation. I didn't see Picard wearing any TNG t-shirtsDisco. It's the canon abbreviation. There are even t-shirts.
Disco. It's the canon abbreviation. There are even t-shirts.
STD is ridiculous. In the old days, I never saw anyone called Enterprise STE. It was (and is) ENT.
Couple seconds.STD was funny for a couple of weeks.
But DSC is written on the side of the shuttles...Disco. It's the canon abbreviation. There are even t-shirts.
Can't say I ever felt the need to abbreviate it. Discovery isn't too long a word.![]()
Because for first few seasons it wasn't Star Trek. They went out of their way to call it just Enterprise. Calling something STE that didn't have Star Trek in the title would be silly. So it became ENT.
But in case of STD, it makes the most perfect sense. Star Trek Discovery
Let's take a look at all abbreviations:
TOS - a weird one to be sure, started probably only after TNG appeared (right?)
TNG - It would be weird to call it STTNG, so TNG stuck as it was more pronounceable
DS9 - easy, Deep Space 9
VOY - STV for some reason didn't take, wasn't around the forums then, not sure the reason, but I suppose people just liked the sound of VOY, And you'll still find some people sticking with VGR
ENT - see my point above, STE wasn't valid
STD - easy, Star Trek Discovery. Easy to say, easy to type. Just a natural fit.
The ONLY reason people don't universally use STD is because it also stands for Sexually Transmitted Decease. So are Star Trek fans so immature that they can't say STD with a straight face?

Don't be this guy
But it's okay. I don't mind people calling it STD. It instantly lets me know where they stand. I prefer it that people are at least upfront about it.
Producers say it's DSC. So, it's DSC.
