Your pitch for a NEW Mass Effect game.

Just a few ideas i've had bouncing around my head about what I would want in a NEW Mass Effect game. I'm also going with the assumption that as a game, Andromeda is dead. As flawed as it was, I actually really enjoyed MEA, but if there is to be any continuation to that series, I assume it will only be in novel or comic form. I'd love to be wrong about this.

But anyways, fully expecting Bioware to go back to the well that is the Milky Way as well as sticking to their guns and not canonizing any one ending, a prequel or "sidequel" is the only option.

I would have the game begin a few years before ME1 and have the game span the entire timeline of the trilogy right up to the ending.

Perhaps your protagonist could be the captain of a relatively small freighter, something akin to the Falcon or Serenity and you could follow the lives of you and your ragtag crew as you deal with the various events of the trilogy while also obviously influencing your own storyline, independent of the trilogy.

You could have tension with aliens because of hard feelings over the first contact war, family killed at Eden Prime, encounters with Geth and Collectors, and even deal with how a simple freighter crew deals with the Reaper war.

You could even end with an epilogue based on which ever choice your Commander Shepard made and finally show us all what life was like in the Milky Way after picking up the pieces of the war.

There is something I just like about seeing the world from "the other side". If you think about it, in all 4 games you play as a character with a military backround and a fully functional, pretty much brand new ship.

You are well funded and have the backing of either a galactic government or a powerfull organization.

Now just imagine being on the other side of that. You work only for yourself and your crew, just trying to get buy. Your home port isn't the shiny and bright Citadel but the dark and dirty Omega. Your ship isn't some top of the line Military Frigate or Scout ship, but instead some well lived in, barely holding together, converted freighter. You're not a criminal mastermind, just a man or a women trying to make his way in a galaxy that doesn't give a damn you exsist.

Maybe I'm too much of a Firefly fan or something, but this appeals to me.

Anyways, just an idea I've had kicking around my head for awhile.

Do a KOTOR-style prequel, during the prior Reapers invasion.

Not sure if you can use the Reapers, we already know they will end up winning.

I like the idea of a game set when the Humans were new on the scene, first contact wars, stuff like that, also like the idea of being an independent force.

I would honestly be glad if they did Andromeda-but-good, in terms of premise. But that will not happen for obvious reasons.

(Andromeda was a solid premise, and the attempts to invoke the brilliant OG Mass Effect were visible, the project was just way too troubled to end up with a good product.)

The big alternatives being
  • a prequel set before the OG Mass Effect,
  • going further into the future past-ME3
  • rebooting the franchise (which the demise of ME:A has made likelier)

Is the player character Prothean or are they of one of their subjugated races?

Intriguing idea (although more than unlikely to happen because, business reasons).

How about a game where you play as one of the alien species rather than human. You're a criminal, and you have a small crew, and every actions you undertake grant you some notoriety. Eventually once your notoriety level is large enough, factions will start to notice you, either in wanting to eliminate you or offer you jobs. Your actions and allegiances are important as they will affect the story, and each faction would have its own story. So that in effect, you could eventually redeem yourself by turning a new leaf.

The problem with ME is that it's such a set in stone saga. I think among the best they could do would be something in the two years between ME1 and ME2--but sadly, it would always be overshadowed by everyone knowing how events will turn out afterwards.

As far as I'm concerned, Andromeda was Bioware's last chance. I'd only be interested in another Mass Effect game if it's made by a competent developer.

I was thinking a Next Gen kind of time jump might be cool.
They could have humans or one of the other races either find a way to get the Mass Relays working again, or find another form of FTL travel. They main conflict could then be over who controls the FTL travel, and it would lead to the player and their crew exploring the galaxy and seeing how a century without FTL has effected everything.

Many moons ago, I worked on a Trek fan-fic with a similar premise. A macguffin had damaged subspace and warp drive was impossible for a century. The central story was about a new Enterprise exploring to find out what happened to other Federation members.

God, I wish I knew what I did with those stories and notes!

How about Andromeda but done correctly...

It also bugged me that the events of the project occured pre the Reaper War.

Alright, before I begin let me set up what would be canon.

Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and all the downloadable content EXCEPT 'The Arrival'. This is essentially a Mass Effect 3 redo from the ground up so there are several key differences.

There is NO REAPER INVASION. Whenever I bring up this point, the most common responses I get is that this makes the 3rd installment anti-clamictic or that players wanted to see Shepard confront and stop the Reaper invasion. I don't see it that way because Shepard DID confront the Reapers and stop their invasion before ME3. It was the first Mass Effect game. So what would this game about? Shepard doing whatever she can to ensure that the galaxy will be able to fight the Reapers when they do arrive. Why? Because the Reapers won't arrive for a thousand years or more. By the time they arrive, Shepard will be long dead.

Knowing this, what does Shepard do? That has so much more dramatic potential than fretting over that pathos inducing hoodie wearing kid.

I've got more ideas on how this story could work, but don't worry. They're just ideas. Not a declaration that this would have improved Mass Effect 3. I'll let this sit here for a while before I go any further.

I don't know what the next game would or should be like, exactly, but I'd like to see a return of Joker and EDI in some form - which I consider to be possible even if there is a long time jump ahead, because of EDI's nature.

My understanding is that Andromeda wasn't really made by Bioware proper - it was made by "Bioware Canada", a division of the company that had only previously been responsible for a somewhat popular mod to one of the ME games, not a full game they made themselves. They tried to cheap out, and got what they paid for. If Bioware put the same resources behind making a new ME game as they did for previous successful entries in the series, they might do well.

Any road forward should start with dumping every known copy of Andromeda into the Sun.

That is true. I'm not sure what Bioware was doing at the time. Maybe they were too busy with something else? Either way, trusting an unproven studio with an important franchise was perhaps a bit of a stretch. Usually for sequels, Obsidian would do them as they've had a close relation with Bioware.
