Your Opinion Solicited Re: New ST: Deep Space Nine

Say ST 11 is a winner at the box office, would a new ST:DS9 be successful on the small screen if picked up by a dedicated channel like SCI-FI ?

DS9 is done. They closed the series and there's no need to try and add anything to it. It would be moderately successful with die-hard Trekkers but it wouldn't bring in any new fans.

The only way I'd want more DS9 on the small screen is if they do an animated series. Even then I wouldn't want the series to be centered on DS9. Just an occasional visit to the station, with voices done by some of the actors.

As said above I feel DS9 wrapped very well. There is little left to add to it. But I have enjoyed some of the relaunch in the novels.

Despite my whining and desire to see DS9 on any screen again- the DS9 Relaunch has been amazing, and I wouldn't want to risk any canon changes due to a series that may interfere with it. I cannot speak too highly of the quality of the relaunch so far. I don't even rank the relaunch in comparison with ST/SciFi fiction- but with Fiction and writing in general. Aside from tiny parts from time to time I haven't liked and a spelling mistake now and again- they are *superb.*

Nope, because there is simply no way to cast better actors than, or even comparable to, the immaculate actors that the original DS9 had. They had dozens of master actors, who were literally among the best on the planet, and among the best who have ever lived. Trying to recast those roles with lesser actors would just come off as poorly-done cheap imitation rehash.

IMO that is exactly the same problem that the new Trek movie will also run into, since Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Scotty were so immaculately-played the first time that they are also unrecastable.

Eh, DS9 is done. The only thing that I'd like to see with that series from now on would be maybe a TV movie where they actually bring Bajor into the Federation, but even that's unnecessary.

Wouldn't like a new DS9 show. They story is done. However if there is a new TV series of Trek, I would like to see it incorporate elements from DS9.

Pretty much agree, though I'll add bringing back Sisko to normal plane of existence to that TV/DVD movie.

Casting problems aside, would it be worthwhile to see some GQ exploration? Seeking out new life and new civilizations could be interesting- and possible, not all of the GQ is owned by the Dominion... there may be neat stories- maybe for a different crew...? I know thats not the same- but the actual DS9 station could factor in.

Sadly I gotta say no. If Trek XI is a hit at the box office and I certainly hope it is (TOS is after all my second favorite Trek) we will get more 23rd C stuff, movies & TV, but the other series will most likely be ignored for so long that when anyone gets around to them, Sisko, Kira et all will have to be recast as well. Which I wouldn't necessarily object to. ;)

Well... he said small screen, didn't Paramount and CBS part, the former with the movies, the latter with the show writes? Or vice versa? So... they wouldn't necessarily do the same thing, and if the movie flops they may go the opposite way from the movies...

As sad as I was that DS9 ended, I wouldn't want a new series based there. DS9 is done as a series. I wouldn't mind a movie of DS9 (whether its on the big screen or TV movie) of the show.

Although after reading about all the new books that are coming out and all the series of books that haven't been on TV, after reading about the upcoming Destiny books etc... ones that look neat that I want to read but haven't been following- so now I'm lost and don't know where to start... a good 'ol DS9 movie/show would be so much easier...

Sorry... feeling slightly overwhelmed... time for sleep. :(

I'll add my voice to the chorus. I love DS9, but it had a great seven-season run with a fantastic ending. More televised or filmed DS9 would not be at the same level as what we got in those seasons or what we are currently getting in the books. Besides the casting issue, Behr and the other writers have moved on to other things.

My preference is that they make no DS9 film or new series.

The series is near-perfect as is. Why monkey with (and possibly mess up) perfection?

If you can get Irha Behr and all of the key DS9 writers (including Ron Moore) involved in such a project, and if you can get TPTB to buy off on giving them free reign to do what they like, come back and talk to me.

But the chances of that happening are so infinitesimally slim that it's not worth talking about.

Many of the memorable actors from DS9 were quite capable, but little known to the public at large. Are you sure there aren't more people out there willing to bring the same commitment to new roles?

Does a new DS9 have to be cast with the same characters in the same role? Let the station, the wormhole and Bajor be the star.

They could do a variation on the Voyager paradigm, but with a twist.

People from the Mirror universe try to capture one or more Federation starships to try to take them back to fight Klingons there. But something goes wrong, some type of explosion disrupts the link between the universes and the Federation crew(s) are permanently stuck in the mirror universe. So they have to figure out how to survive and deal with the galactic politics there without a Federation.

Since Sisko was killed in the DS9 mirror universe and they didn't know about the wormhole it could be a whole different DS9.

If Paramount uses this I'll sue. ROFL
