I'm always impressed by people buying Xmas presents in November. I just don't have the forethought to start so early. I'm a last week before Christmas sort of person usually.

I sometimes start on Boxing Day... :D I seriously do have at least one present that I bought on Boxing Day last year, but it's just a stocking stuffer.

Bought a few presents today, including a self present (Wii Fit).

Boxing Day I can sort of understand; Christmas is on the mind anyway.

But May?? :D

It was the blow-up Kate Beckinsale doll, wasn't it. You can't fool me with "Christmas Present" routine.... ;)

See, and here I was going to say that sometimes I buy presents on boxing day for the Christmas the day before. :D

Well, my furniture finally arrived yesterday.

And I have to admit: it was worth the wait. Both the sofa and loveseat are big and comfy--I can actually stretch out completely on the sofa.

My apartment is finally starting to look like a home, instead of a campsite, or a squat, or something.

^ Glad they finally arrived!

Soon you'll be buying extra little cushions and throws... ;)

A new couch

What kind?

Today's purchases included a car valeting, a haircut, a bouquet of roses, cream tea for two, a bottle of Oloroso sherry and a bottle of Pedro Ximenez sherry. :)

Which ones... as the winter draws in I find myself drinking more and more amontialldo and oloroso and am looking for a new bottle (or 6) to try.

I always have a bottle of Manzanilla in the fridge for those little sips here and there :D

Today I mostly bought... Sweet potatoes. My new favourite starch source after the hob on the cooker gave out and now I can't boil my plain brown rice.

Hugo - Baked, always baked ( Potatoes that is :p )

Nothing special - Tesco's Finest (it's nicely priced at about a fiver). I haven't tried the PX before, but I've nearly polished off the last bottle of Oloroso from them and it's fairly decent. Not sure what bodegas they come from; the bottles say they're bottled by Luis Alvarez Garcia, but google has told me nothing about them so I'm assuming they're some random merchant.

My sweet tooth pushes me irresistably towards Oloroso, Cream or PX.

The thing is, the Oloroso especially is wonderfully versatile. Aperitif or digestif. With dessert or cheese or even with a light meal. The sherry WORKS. Amazing; my consumption of regular wine has just collapsed over the last few weeks (though I did have a nice bottle of 2004 Wegeler Wehlener Mosel Riesling over lunch today...).

I'll have a look at the Tesco Oloroso then... I drink their Manzanilla and at £6.50 it's quite quite lovely.

Though as a rule I'm an Amontialldo boy... rich, warming, nutty, christmas-cakey, but dry (well the styles I buy).

I only have PX around Christmas time to be honest. Usually poured over good quality vanilla Ice-Cream, or used to help baste some duck or turkey.

Hugo - slowly starting to buy his Christmas wine

Now that is a FABULOUS idea.

I'm starting to think about Christmas wine too. Any ideas for something a bit different to go with the Christmas turkey & all the trimmings lunch? I usually get something from the Right Bank (the fruitiness of the large amount of Merlot usually goes nicely with all the Christmassy flavours, while a little bit of Cab lets it stand up to the food melange, plus I'm very fond of Pomerol anyway). But this year I kind of feel like picking something more unusual...

Need to think about this, and I'll PM you, but if you want to go right bank then I'd go for a 2003 - very ripe, very opulent and will marry well with the malange of meats that generally end up on the table at Christmas.

That's the problem with the "Christmas meal".. too many flavours on the table to match to just one wine. What you need is 3 different wine glasses.. one with Pinot Noir in it, one with a grenache based southern Rhone (Village level Rhone) and one Cabernet Franc/Merlot based. I mean, Turkey, herby stuffing, sweet condiments, roasted veg, some form of pig-or-other... too much for one wine to handle.

I'm actually thinking of going New World Cab Franc this year.... possibly even American, though I have a tendancy of buying the wine and then matching the meal. And I'm not a turkey guy either and usually go with something more gamey.

However, off the top of my head... possibly something Spanish with little or no oak. Ohh... yeah, something from Bierzo would do it. Mencia is such a fabulously ripe grape variety, but with a twang of charred meat and herbiness (possibly a riper version of Cab Franc??). The freshness and ripeness will enliven the turkey (and help out the cranberry sauce), the grassiness go with herbs/veggies, and the meatyness go with any stronger meat you put onto the table. Go to Waitrose, they have one in their "fine wine section" for about a £10. Can't remember what it's called off the top of my head though... a wonderful intro to the style, and if you like it then hunt around for something with a bit of age.

It was in fact the best supermarket wine I've had in an age and worth more than the £10.

Hugo - has misplaced his tasting note-book
