Your FIVE!

1. The Devil (Brimstone)
2. Batman/Bruce Wayne (Batman 60's live action)
3. Sam Merlotte (True Blood)
4. Maxwell Smart (Get Smart)
5. Thomas Veil (Nowhere Man)

Honorable Mensches:
1. Colonel Tigh (GINO...er...NuBsg)
2. David Addison (Moonlighting)
3. Col. Hogan (Hogan's Heroes)
4. Sarah Conner (The Sarah Cancelled Chronicles)
5. Aeryn Sun (That show with the muppets I didn't appreciate until after it got shit-canned.)

Tough'un, but I'll give it a shot...since I think the no-Trek rule is silly, I hereby ignore it. It's not like Trek characters have some kind of monopoly on great-character-hood.

1. Spock, TOS/Trek XI
2. Dexter Morgan, Dexter
3. John Crichton, Farscape
4. Fox Mulder, The X-Files
5. Ari Gold, Entourage

...which would be a pretty interesting dinner party, huh? :D Especially if I could shoehorn Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, James "Sawyer" Ford and Garak in there somewheres...

Without any Star Trek characrers (read: Spock and DS9 characters):

Anna Forbes (This Life)
Frank Pembleton (Homicide: Life on the Street)
John Locke (Lost)
Dr Niles Crane (Frasier)
Derek "Del Boy" Trotter (Only Fools and Horses)

honorable mentions:

Ryan O'Reilly (Oz)
Gomez Addams (The Addams Family)
Fitz (Cracker - the original UK one, obviously)
Wolf (The 10th Kingdom)
Gaius Baltar (Battlestar Galactica)

The NON-Star Trek rule is there because, hello, there are millions of "who's your fav" trek character in the various TREK forums....I put this thread here so as to see 'what other' interests there might be out there...I guess Shatner's SNL quote becomes more wise as each year passes...but then again? I hate rules too...

1. Dr. Samuel Beckett, Quantum Leap: brilliant, compassionate, obsessive, impulsive, trying to do the right thing, and oh, so sexy.
2. Caprica Six, Battlestar Galactica: her journey from killing machine to human (ignoring the stupid series finale reveal) was terrific.
3. Mary Beth Lacey, Cagney and Lacey: she defied all female stereotypes by simultaneously embracing being a wife, mother, terrific detective, and moral center.
4. Zoe Washburn, Firefly: she was a deadpan everyperson - one of the few women on TV who wasn't defined by who she was "hooked up" with; she was capable, calm, loyal, smart, and very funny. The character was kind of a female imprint on a traditionally male character type.
5. John Carter, ER: apart from some plotting missteps, Carter's development from new minted intern to fully mature, worldly wise doctor was the best thing about the show.

2. Caprica Six, Battlestar Galactica: her journey from killing machine to human (ignoring the stupid series finale reveal) was terrific.
.
She would've been on my list, if it wasn't for the character's sad wimpification and lameification in seasons 3 and especially season 4.

However, if we consider all the different Sixes in the show (Caprica, Gina, Natalie, Overseer Six from season 1, New Caprica-traumatized Six in "Faith", Shelley Godfrey...), the Cylon model Six is certainly fascinating.

Jack Bauer is a worthy pick, and I'm glad he's showing up...I hope they continue to flesh him out more in the next season....

Another honorable mention is Richard Mulligan's "BURT CAMPBELL" character on SOAP. I thought he made that show, even more so that Billy Crystal...
