Your FIVE!

^Quincy! I knew I was forgetting someone. I loved that show as a kid- it was the first grown-up non-sitcom I was allowed to watch.

Great, I have the theme music in my head now.

In no particular order.....

1) The Doctor (all incarnations)
2) Leroy Jethro Gibbs (NCIS)
3) Mick Belker (Hill Street Blues)
4) Dr Sam Beckett (Quantum Leap)
5) Bill, Tim and Graeme (The Goodies)

Honorarble mentions to go:

Benton Fraser (Due South)
Gene Hunt (Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes)
Templeton Faceman Peck (The A Team)

1. Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz, NYPD Blue)
2. Denny Crane (William Shatner, The Practice and Boston Legal)
3. Spike (James Marsters, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel)
4. The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant, Doctor Who)
5. William Adama (Edward James Olmos, Battlestar Galactica)

Louie DePalma (Taxi) - forget the cabbies, if you really look at this show it was really about Louie.

Dr. Johnny Fever (WKRP In Cincinatti) - if for no other reason inspired my own too brief radio broadcasting career.

Dr. Sindney Freedman (M.A.S.H.) - possibly the best-written character anywhere in the series, and Alan Arbus delivers every time. I go out of my way to watch any episode featuring him.

Dr. Walter Bishop (Fringe) - He's literally a mad scientist. What more could you want?

Constable Benton Fraser/Det. Ray Vecchio (Due South) - Tied for the fifth slot, and you gotta have them together given the way these guys complement each others existence so well. Can't really have one without the other. and don't even get me started on the whole "fake Ray" thing from the last season.

The NON-Star Trek rule is there because, hello, there are millions of "who's your fav" trek character in the various TREK forums...
I ignore those threads because they're boring and what do they have to do with this thread?

These are more like my favorite memorable characters, if I thought about it for a while i might come up with a different listl

Jim Rockford
House
The Doctor (all, well, 1-5,9-10I don't really know about the middle)
Xena
Basil Fawlty

1. Arnold Judas Rimmer, Red Dwarf.
He's a complete & total bastard. He's the crux of the show's comedy. He has a small acorn of goodness at his center. He's so neurotic that we can always feel good about ourselves by comparison. And he's played by one of the most talented actors I've ever seen.

2. Eric Cartman, South Park.
One of the most important TV characters ever. On a series that provides a warped, funhouse mirror view of the sad American psyche, Cartman is the raging Id. He embodies every human vice imaginable. In terms of creating conflict, one of him is worth 10 Louie DePalmas.

3. Jack McCoy, Law & Order.
His passioned delivery is what made this die-hard sci-fi fan fall in love with a crime drama.
Honorable mention for his successor, Michael Cutter. He's an even tougher ball-buster than Jack ever was.

4. Bill McNeil, NewsRadio.
His pompous insanity was what made that show work. Not only was he funny but he also brought out the funniest work from the other characters, especially Dave & Matthew. When he died, the show totally went off the rails. R.I.P. Phil Hartman.

5. Rodney McKay, Stargate Atlantis.
Alfred Hitchcock once said that the quickest way to get an audience to like a character was to make him good at his job. In Dr. McKay's case, that's his only redeeming feature. The rest of the time, it's just a joy watching him heap his arrogant abuse upon the rest of the Atlantis expedition.

Honorable mentions:
Niles Crane, Frasier
Lennie Briscoe, Joe Fontana, & Cyrus Lupo, Law & Order
Liz Parker & Maria DeLuca, Roswell
Jaye Tyler, Wonderfalls
Miranda Hobbes, Sex & the City
The entire cast of Angel, especially Angel, Doyle, Wesley, & Fred.
Buffy Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, particularly Seasons 1 & 2. After that, she got real bitchy & depressing. But if I were only counting Seasons 1 & 2, she'd probably be in the top 4.

Lionel Luthor- Smallville
Top 5

Lex Luthor- Smallville
Rodney McKay- Stargate Atlantis
Alan Shore- Boston legal
Denny Crane- Boston Legal

Special mention given the ST exclusion

Elim Garak- DS9

Honorable Mentions:
Gaius Balter- BSG
Pacey Witter- Dawson's Creek
Joey Potter- Dawson's Creek
Barney Stinson- How I Met Your Mother
Daniel Jackson- SG-1
Seth Cohen- The OC
Summer Roberts- The OC
Bailey Salinger- Party of Five
Charlie Salinger- Party of Five
Claudia Salinger- Party of Five
Sarah Reeves- Party of Five
Griffin Holbrooke- Party of Five
Brooke Davis- One Tree Hill
Dr. Gregory House- House
The Doctor as played by Tom Baker- Doctor Who
The Doctor as played by David Tennant- Doctor Who
Walter Bishop- Fringe
Basil Fawlty Fawlty Towers
Manuel - Fawlty Towers

Of all time?

Crap.

I can tell you that Buffy Summers and Christopher Eccleston's Doctor would probably be two of them. Probably. Okay, pretty definitely Buffy. Maybe Baltar in the Ron Moore Improved Version of Battlestar Galactica.

Well, it might have been even more interesting if we'd left out ALL scifi characters - not just Trek characters. But in any case, there is only one Trek character who would make my top 5 anyway, and that would be Ben Sisko (big surprise).

But leaving out Star Trek, what I decided to do was make a list of several of my favorites, and then highlight the top 5. It's just too hard any other way.

Londo Mollari (Babylon 5)
Sayid Jarrah (LOST)*
Desmond Hume (LOST)
James "Sawyer" Ford (LOST)
Richard Alpert (LOST) (expected favorite, after we find out that he really runs this shit! )
Jim Rockford (The Rockford Files)
Hawkeye Pierce (M*A*S*H)*
Frank Burns (M*A*S*H)
Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)
George Costanza (and his Festivus-celebrating parents) (Seinfeld)
Lilly Rush (Cold Case)
Jack O'Neill (Stargate SG-1)
John Sheppard (Stargate: Atlantis)
Mal Reynolds (Firefly)
Angel (Buffy/Angel)
Spike (Buffy/Angel)
Fox Mulder (The X-Files)*
Charles Ingalls (Little House on the Prairie)
Jethro Gibbs (NCIS)
Tony DiNozzo (NCIS)
Frank Pembleton (Homicide: LOTS)
Richard Channing (Falcon Crest)*
Angela Channing (Falcon Crest)
Dr. Addison Montgomery (Grey's Anatomy - not so much in Private Practice though)
Dr. Derek Sheperd (Grey's Anatomy)
Sen./President David Palmer (24)
Jack Bauer (24)
Christine Cagney (Cagney & Lacey)*
Denny Crane (Boston Legal) - tough pick between him and Alan though
Alan Shore (Boston Legal)* - tough pick between him and Denny though
Jaye Tyler (Wonderfalls)*
John Crichton (Farscape)
Aeryn Sun (Farscape)
Norm! (Cheers)
Lex Luthor (Smallville)
The Doctor (Tennant only) (Doctor Who)
Lee Adama (nuBSG)
Kara Thrace (nuBSG)
Saul Tigh (nuBSG)

* denotes strong runner-up

Hmm...I wonder if I'll be able to limit to 5...

Dr. Gregory House, House. Just simply an intriguing character played by an interesting actor.

Jim Halpert, The Office. I know it's silly...but I hope I can find a guy like him some day, and he seems to be just about the only sane one in the office.

Hawkeye Pierce, M*A*S*H. The strength of character he shows by having a sense of humor in such a horrendous situation, and the amazing revelations of his inner character we do see through the chinks in his armor.

Dean Winchester, Supernatural. See above.

Lorelei Gilmore, Gilmore Girls. The inner strength she had to make the choice to raise her daughter on her own at 17, the lengths she went just to give her daughter the life she wanted for herself was just amazing. That and I love the character's biting sense of humor.

Honorable mentions:
Sam Winchester, Supernatural; Pam Beasley-Halpert, The Office; Michael Scott, The Office; Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls; Richard Gilmore, Gilmore Girls; BJ Hunnicut, M*A*S*H; Trapper, M*A*S*H; Wilson, House; Dr. Frasier Crane, Frasier

Yeah, an odd assortment I guess. A good mix from all my favorite shows. I do have a penchant towards leading men, I admit.

Cordelia Chase (BtVS/Angel)
The Doctor (Doctor Who)
Frank Sabotka (The Wire)
Saul Tigh (BSG)

I found Tim in the original UK version of The Office more likable and sympathetic than Jim.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Dwight is far, far more likable than his UK counterpart Gareth (the biggest change in character from one version to the other).

Wow, didn't know there were so many Homicide fans here.

Here's my very eclectic list:

1. Pembleton
2. The 10th Doctor
3. Sam Malone
4. George Reeve's Superman
5. KITT

Frank Drebin
Thomas Magnum
Optimus Prime
House

I'm going to exclude the Doctor from Doctor Who as it always depends on which incarnation he currently is.

1) Very Special Agent Fox Mulder from The X-Files
2) John Locke from LOST
3) Special Agent Gibbs from NCIS
4) Tie- Bill Adama and Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica
5) G'Kar from Babylon 5

Close Runners Up:
Olivia Dunham and Walter Bishop from Fringe
Dutch from The Shield
Bartlet from The West Wing
Frank Sabotka from The Wire
and, of course, House from House

Time to bash, I hate a good chunk of the idiot characters mentioned in this thread

Dexter Morgan, Dexter

Over-rated show, not half as dark, scray or funny as people hyped it to be.
Switched off - BORING

William Adama (Edward James Olmos, Battlestar Galactica)

Outside a small circle of hardcore groupie fanatics, nobody talks about that BSG series anymore

Oh yeah, Moore forgets that the one thing enduring about Trek is the characters... Is there anyone, even non-sifi fans who don't have some idea who Kirk and Spock are? How many know Adama?

I rest my case..

Dr. Walter Bishop (Fringe) - He's literally a mad scientist. What more could you want?

A tv series that's watchable, that's what I want
no not Fringe, not "Lost", good television
