Hate’s a strong word, but I find I’m not necessarily favourable to most of these shows, although I have been open to watching all of them.
Discovery is very much a superheroes-in-space show. And that leads to polarizing views on the show – good and bad, and optimist and cynic. I feel the show is a bunch of untapped potential and that’s the most frustrating thing about it.
After the first season, Picard was an interesting – if bleak - look at where the TNG era was years removed from NEM and the Romulan supernova. After S2, Picard is a show about Picard coming to terms of important people close to him having committed suicide as much as it is a TNG era swansong. Not a subject matter I can be enthusiastic about. I’m expecting S3 to be leading to Picard’s self sacrifice at the end of the season and series.
Lower Decks is the only show I really have affinity for, but I also realized that its also clothed in nostalgic references (nostalgic elements have been the best parts of PIC). Its hard to tell how likable the show would be if it did not rely on nostalgia, cameos, and Easter eggs.
Strange New Worlds is a show that I was initially excited about. I can tell with the recaps that someone really wants this supposedly episodic show to be a serialized show. Nothing wrong with continuity, but there’s a difference between serialization and continuity. SNW feels in many ways a modernized retelling of TOS and will at some point will significantly break with continuity down the line.
With Prodigy, I get it’s a kids show, but at times it’s a slog to get through even though I like the animation and how accurate the CGI is to live action.
Kelvin movies are shallow action movies and always trying to recreate better Trek films, despite original ideas worthy of the big screen being present in non-canon work related to the Kelvin timeline.
