In "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" I can't help but chuckle a few times - I mean, it's so obvious what the message of the show is that it's at times hard to take seriously. At one point Kirk says, "You two have rubbed off on each other" or something similar, which is an intentional understatement, but he's so annoyed at the shenanigans and squabbling that it's a great line that's funny.
On a serious note, though, Kirk, in reference to their hatred for each other says, "It's all they have left," which is kind of sobering. This episode goes from a squabble that is often absurd to something that's deadly serious, which is why I kind of like it. From the point of view of an outsider, it is absurd. But when you see the destruction that it has wrought, you think, "Oh."

You were correct, it's just Shatner loved to use his staccato style of delivery to break the scripted line into very distinct syllables. Hence, that equates to more Shatner air time. Adam West would use the same technique in order to get more screen time on Batman.
