Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Trek's imperfect masterpiece. The only film prior to the Abrams films that felt "big", like it belongs on the silver screen. I love the ideas it explores, and getting the gang back together.

Makes me wish we would have gotten Star Trek: Phase II.
It is imperfect but it aims for something higher than the other films, so ironically enough, it's better.

I don't know. Ambition counts for something, sure, but so does execution. You don't get an "A" for effort where movies are concerned.

Movies are not meant to be admired, but experienced. I respect TMP, but I think I've rewatched it once in the last twenty years. Whereas I can't count the number of times I've seen and enjoyed KHAN and some of other movies.

At the very least, they're a lot more fun.

I also enjoy rewatching Khan, which I view as a big budget episode. I can appreciate TWOK for what it is, essentially a drawn out cat and mouse battle between The Enterprise and The Reliant with a magnificant performance by Montalban, and some nice touches of nautical spirit.

Last time I watched some Trek films, I experienced a major change in how I saw one of them, at least. Suddenly, Generations shot from about 2/3 of the way down the list straight to #1 for me. I now think the problem was that it succeeds as adult drama, that can be appreciated better when older, while it "failed" as a popcorn movie, which is basically what Trek films, as opposed to Trek on TV, are for.
-------------------
Wrath of Khan is still up there, but the lazy acting has already set in, the cliché lightweight fan-satisfying lines... It works because so much of WoK comes from an effort to do a good film independently of the Trek aspect. We get jarring horror moments, for one thing. And the Trek aspect is there, even if a lightweight version. WoK seemed to be half real Trek, half Star Wars (because of the IL&M effects), an improvement over TMP having been half 2001, half star Wars. 2001 is my favorite film, and TMP did a painfully empty and light version of it. I couldn't believe it, seeing it in 1979. The whole film seemed to be sleepwalking.

First Contact wins it for me. Picard and crew are fighting their greatest nemesis, the future is in the balance, and we got to see Troi drunk. Good times.

FIRST CONTACT is far and away the best of the TNG movies, certainly.

My favourite two movies are TWOK and TUC. The former because it's just an awesome piece, fun and action-oriented but also contemplating our mortality and ageing. And the very touching death of Spock. The latter for being a great send-off for the original crew, a favourite magnificent bastard in General Chang, and a nice nod to the end of the cold war. I also have a soft spot for TMP, since it was the first movie after the TV show, breathtaking visuals and a really high-concept science fiction story.

1. The Wrath of Khan - action, adventure, and I was 16 when it came out....
2. The Motion Picture - the most "sci-fi" of all Trek movies, and the closest one in spirit to the original series
3. First Contact - the best of the TNG movies, and the only one of them I can still watch now
4. The Undiscovered Country - action, mystery, and a nice farewell to the original cast

Like others in this thread have said, I'm blown away by the love TMP is getting. I mean, there's a reason it is known as Star Trek: The (Slow) Motion Picture.

My top four are
TVH
TUC
FC
TWOK

I would say that Star Trek: First Contact is the best standalone film, whereas Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan is the best Star Trek film.

I'd really like to see insurrection. Everyone says it's basically like a TV episode on the big screen. If that's the case what could go wrong?

^ I like Insurrection far more that the four movies that follow it.

Personal overall favorite is TWOK, has the most charming villain, plus Khan is muy macho.

Favorite TNG movie is Generations, because it has Kirk

Do you prefer Khan in Space Seed or Khan in WoK? I really like him in SS, but he does well in the movie too(imo)

It's too bad Khan never made any other appearances...

Problem with First Contact is that it was a contrived story that rang false, because they were re-using the BOBW idea of one and one only Borg cube going after Earth to come up with a big movie. They were right, the Borg were such a big idea that they needed more time, but what they had needed was an extended story in season 4. It was all a bit vampire like, Berman etc feeding off this old idea to milk it of every drop of excitement.
