Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office tracking)

Re: BoxOfficeProphets.com discusses Star Trek

I'm glad I didn't win the trekbbs award. I was more pessimistic than even the naysayers. I went 40% over Trek's previous best opening performance and still wound up wrong. That's how well this movie did!

So now the movie is almost at $234 million domest, only $1 million from surpassing STTMP as the highest grossing ST film (adjusted for ticket prices) and at $352 million worldwide. This is almost $100 milion more than my "optimistic"worldwide prediction..wow.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

Opening day/night will be the ONLY time this film makes any money of any respect. Otherwise, it'll make Paul Blart look like Dark Knight.

Nobody of any number is gonna go see this thing. Opening day/night, all the Trek fans will be lined up, clinging to the hope that somehow they'll be able to save this thing, but otherwise, it'll be a royal floppa-roppa.

Every time I've been in a theater where the trailers for Trek have been shown, the audience reactions range from light chuckles, to laughter, to outright groans. People who like Trek will see this thing. Other people will not.

Think about it... if someone has already had 40+ years to get into Trek, and never did, what could possibly make them want to see this? They're just not into Trek. Nothing will change their mind... for them, they like movies with raw, mindless, action, where lots of things go KA-BOOM, with hot cars, and hot women... in other words, movies like Transformers. For this audience, Trek is a series loved by chess-club geeks, who give strange hand signals... and they won't change their mind about it... if they could, they would have done so with ENT or one of the more recent films.

But, if they (Paramount) need to see the dismal box office returns to show them the grim reality, then so be it. Trek better hope to god no other movie opens the same day, otherwise the OTHER film will be the one that rakes in money.

Where's this guy right now I wonder and what is he thinking?

..and now, 33.426 million tickets later....

You can be forgiven, having probably stewed a long time over the stultifying BO results of the last few movies.

Re: Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office trackin

I can't remember exactly, but prior to seeing a trailer, I guessed about $125 million. After seeing the trailer I still got it wrong at a guess somewhere in the $200 million region. Opening night, after seeing it was a quality film and how well the crowd reacted to it, it was anybody's guess.

You just never know (but keep bringing the Emma Peel avs anyway.)

The number of discs sold for Nemesis was into the millions after a few weeks, so I would dare say the majority were NOT at the bargain price. Even so, it demonstrates a lot of people didn't see it in the theater but bought it on DVD. I bet most of those people enjoyed it in that format as I did.

I'm willing to bet that the Foster novelization of the movie will be a bestseller...more money in the coffers.

Legendary sci-fi Author Alan Dean Foster is going to follow up his best selling Star Trek movie adaptation with a sequel novel set in the new movie universe. Foster made the revelation for the book, tentatively titled "Star Trek: Refugees", on his website, and also spoke about it in a new interview — details below.

So did a lot of people in Serenity at this point in it's release.

No they didn't...

Oh BS they didn't...I was HERE for it. Once the test screenings and the premiere were out the fans (barring a few, just like now) were jumping up and down...praising the film to the skies...it was gonna go "mainstream" big-time...on and on and on.

But on opening weekend, Joe and Jane Buttsintheseats said: "uhh....how about...no!"

Dream on. "A lot of people" meant about 100 Firefly fans.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

Domestic $55-75 Million Opening Weekend
Domestic $160-190 Million Total

Worldwide $80-100 Million Total

Solid, but not a Monster hit. Of course I hope for more.

Good to see It solidly beat my prediction.

I have a habit of pronouncing the "p" in psychic, and decided to see how that looked spelled out.

Re: What are your Box office Predictions for Star Trek?

Im expecting Nemesis numbers

You're ill-informed.
You're [sic] crystal ball tell you that? ;)

My crystal ball is pretty good, dude. :techman:

$100 million at US box office.

$40m-$50m in all other territories combined.

If the film breaks even after marketing and all other costs, I'll eat my shorts.

As I said at the time, this prediction is a keeper.

If you want to be honest, you'll be eating your shorts now. If you don't, you can speculate and make up numbers for "marketing and all other costs."

It's still impossible to beat this one, though:

I underestimated this movie considerably back in April, calling it at about 200 million dollars domestically. I love being wrong when I'm being pessimistic. :techman:

Re: Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office trackin

I'm glad I didn't make a prediction here.

Re: Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office trackin

Me too. I mean, I hoped it would do well, and I figured it would probably be a moderate success when all was said and done, but I never in my wildest dreams thought it would perform as strongly as it has.

Re: Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office trackin

Turns out I'll be fairly close. I predicted $215 million. Domestic looks like it'll top out around $251-257 million.

Re: Your Box office Predictions for Star Trek? (and box office trackin

I actually thought you were off by the most. You did predict $800 million worldwide.

My *worldwide* was WAAAAAAY off. I'll admit. Ugh. That one wasn't even remotely close.

But domestic I had this feeling we were looking at a certain total. I guess I just know domestic sci-fi audience tastes after all these years.
