Your annual vacation/holidays

Munich's airport is one of the nicest I've ever been in.

I definitely liked being able to take the S-Bahn directly from our hotel (which was directly above Rosenheimer Platz station - we could even take an elevator right down there) to the airport.

And the Lufthansa lounge had a SELF-SERVE BAR!

side note: @rhubarbodendron, what is Munich Hauptbahnhof's status these days? I heard that the whole place is being rebuilt and that there's a lot of construction chaos there. Is that true?

yes, that's correct. The ticket hall has already been torn down. They are going to build the new subway lines 1 and 2 in that spot. Then the new building will be put on top. They expect to be finished by 2028 the earliest.
As the hall that covers the tracks also needs renovation, there'll be construction and repair work until 2030.

Ooooh yes, I can imagine what a wonderful time you'll have if you don't gamble!

My dad took me to Vegas for my 21st birthday and I thought it was pretty cool. I don't plan on going back, but I am glad that I've done it once.

I don't gamble either (I played the slots maybe once, and that was it) but I just stared at all the neon. We did see some shows - Siegfried & Roy, plus a Sam Kinison standup act - and ate a lot.

Didn't much care for the weather, though. "It's a dry heat". Yeah, but it's still too damn MUCH heat! :scream:

Thought so. :sigh:

Oh well, if I do the same itinerary I did last time, I'll only be using it (the aboveground portion) once anyway, and that's the InterCity Express rail from Berlin to Munich. As long as that line still runs, I'm OK.

I'm hoping that when Munich Hauptbahnhof is done, it'll be as awesome as Berlin's. Now THAT is a train station. :mallory:

as long as it doesn't get a case like Berlin Airport.... :D
(ok, some might not know it: that airport building site is more than a decade behind schedule, the price has almost trebled, they keep having to rebuild parts because of mistakes and the opening date keeps being postponed. Currently, they are aiming for 2025, I believe. 2052 wouild be a more realistic estimation. I suggest they name it Murphy Airport. It has become proverbial as a synonym for utopical enterprises)

Unless someone from the future travels back into 2020 to fasten the completion of the buiding efforts - getting himself into trouble with the DTI. We are already observed by aliens who hide among us and they will be amused about our infrastructure. Certainly we are not deemed worth to be made contact with..... Too immature a society we are, with much to learn yet.

The latest info I have is they're still planning to open BER in 2020.

As for the name, IIRC they're going to name the airport after Willy Brandt.

Hmm, irl Brandt was a good deal faster than this airport. Particularly at losing his job. ;)
He was the first chancellor in Germany who received a vote of non-confidence (in 1972 iirc). He survived politically but had to step back in '74 due to the Guillaume affair.

Opening the airport this year is a curageous plan but I doubt it'll succeed

Looks like a trip to Minnesota this summer will be in the works. Both the missus and I never have been to the Land of 10,000 Lakes....and Oklahoma as it's on the way. It will increase my states count to 44 (I've already gone through Kansas and Iowa).

We will be going up there for a disc golf tournament in July.

We've been relatively consistent about one major vacation per year, plus long weekends away, side trips, and visits home to our families. We've also established, organically, a trend of planning out a vacation that allows us to do something touristy and something super relaxing (so, visit a city and explore for a few days but then go to a beach or someplace relaxing to decompress, before coming home). Last year, we went to Cartagena and then to Curacao. A great way to balance things out. This year? We aren't sure yet, but I've had my sights on Paris for a few years now. Maybe Paris and then the French riviera? Or hop over to Italy and do the Amalfi coast?

I'm about to take my first vacation of the year (my dad and I are going to Montréal in two weeks) but I'm already planning next year's trips.

In addition to the cities I go to every year - New York, Toronto, Montréal - I'm seriously considering a return to Seattle. And I may start going to Chicago every year as well, because I love it that much.

Is travelling that easy atm? Dunno about the situation in the Americas but in Europe there are a lot of restrictions atm and most countries make random health tests. If the news agencies are to be trusted, most of Italy consists of quarantine areas.

Quarantine vacation is the shittiest kind of vacation atm. Like prison. And you need someone who buys your foodstuff and goods for you. No contact with anyone. Meeeeeeeeeeeeeh. I wanted to go to Greece this year.
