The Laughing Vulcan

Admiral
Admiral
Watched The Ensigns of Command last night...

The one with the Sheliak and the actor who had his credit removed... The one where Data shuttles down to an irradiated planet to shift the settlers before they get zapped by the Sheliak.

It's also the one where Data learns that a kiss can be used to indicate support, when the local android fan befriends him...

There was no mention of appropriateness, context or gender when they discussed the act of a supportive kiss.

Do you think Data tried offering support in that way to anyone else, before he learnt the rest of the social nuances regarding the practice?

I have an image of him having to be reassembled after trying to offer support to a depressed Klingon. :klingon:

Data has superhuman strength. I can imagine the phrase "We will not talk of this!" being uttered at some point.

I'm sure Geordi had to exlpain it to him better :guffaw:

I like the episode, but it really is just 42 minutes of someone taking too long to figure out how to get people to choose to pack their shit instead of getting dead

Which one?

In terms of appropriate, the woman did not seem to mind when Data initiated the kiss, and her response was to return the kiss.

Gender? My oldest brother (in his late thirties) still kisses my father on the cheek, a show of support and affection, when he feels that Papai "needs it."

:)

Hahaha! I can only imagine him trying to indicate support to Picard.

Oh my!

^ He had all his lines dubbed by someone else? Never picked up on that.

Yeah, like most production, a lot more voices are re-dubbed than most people would expect, so when the call went out for him to come back, he said he wasn't happy with his performance, he's pretty much done with it. And so they had to re-dub everything for Gosheven. I'm not sure if him not getting credit was TNG's doing or his, though.

All I know is if Data gave me a kiss, I would feel alot better. Afterall, look at the kinda guy he is. If he kissed you, you'd know he mean't it.
