You ever hear sounds that aren't there?!

I can sense crt televisions/monitors from about 10 metres away. It's because their EHTs oscillate at around 25kHz, and that produces ultrasound. Most adults cannot do this, as you lose the ability to hear ultrasound in your mid twenties. And only about a quarter of young people can sense ultrasound at these (relatively low) frequencies.

It doesn't come across to me as sound though. I expect the brain deals with ultrasound slightly differently than conventional sounds.

I can hear the CRT whine too in some instances, albeit less so nowadays. I also often used to be able to hear the very high pitched noise from dog whistles. It's a far cry from the modern ultrasound machines used in medicine, which emit sounds in the megahertz range which is inaudible to human ears.

Interestingly, from about the age of 25 or so, humans tend to be less sensitive to high frequency sound, due to loss of function of the auditory receptors in the cochlea that pick up the highest frequencies as one becomes older. This differentiation in sensitivity to high-frequency sound been the basis for certain recent public ultrasonic youth deterrent devices to disperse young 'uns from the corner shops and other public places they tend to congregate around. :klingon:

Really? I've always been able to sense those things. I figured everybody could!

I think I got a touch of tintinitus, though my hearing's realy good when I focus on it.

at times I hear a squealing, mecahincal, dull roar at night when I'm trying to sleep.

and I might hear an off word or three every now and then that nobody said

"Mechanical dull roar" -could be infrasound! As machines are (re-)designed to become less noisy a lot of the noise is actually just pushed from the 'normal' spectrum of human hearing into infra- and ultrasound, some people are however still bothered by it!

I sometimes "hear" stuff while falling asleep...normaly when I´m very tired. It´s called a "hypnagogic episode".

I can't remember how many times the tv was on AV and I was the only one who could hear it.

I can usually hear when TVs are on, but it's almost instinctual, only barely without conscious hearing range.

Interesting theory. :vulcan: Aside form the HVAC system in my house (which has a diferent sound than this whining roar that I sometimes hear), I don't know what machine could be making those sounds, the nearest neighbor is a mile away.

I've only ever heard stuff that isn't there when on the verge of falling asleep. The most vivid such example was when I worked the sound board for a church that organized something called hellhouse. They had this guy in costume wearing a microphone, and his words would go through distortion, so that he sounded demonic as he led people from room to room of grisly scenes depicting a family's godless life. Anyway, after hours of listening to this guy, show after show, my brain applied the same distortion to my thoughts when I went to bed. It was a little disturbing. :)
