"Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film!

Re: "Yorktown: A Time to Heal" - Official thread for the Sulu fan film

Why isn't the original design for the Yorktown being used. The original design that was going to be used had the warp engines below the saucer.
I do not remember who originally designed it, but I thought it was more unique and interesting to look at.

Two versions of the USS Yorktown appear in this film. At the beginning of the film, it appears as a Constitution Class starship (same design as the 60s USS Enterprise). During the film, it is given a "refit" after it is damaged in an attack. The refitted ship (designed by Andrew Probert) has the warp engines below the saucer. If you watch the teaser trailer on Youtube and Vimeo, you will see both versions of the ship appear in the trailer: https://vimeo.com/43588987

This is awesome.

Must say, I'm really looking forward to seeing this.

We have now started adding FX to the original super 8 film. Will have some before and after pics to show over the next few weeks.

In terms of filming the missing Bridge scenes, I am still waiting on costumes from Kathy Pillsbury, who made the costumes in the 80s for the film. Hopefully she will have these done soon. I have a group of actors from Austin, Texas who will be filming those scenes for us, and the plan is to use the awesome Ajax/Exeter bridge set for those scenes.

Very cool, with luck all the filming can be finished before the end of the year.

Ah, very cool! I'm friends wit Mary Czerwinski who also had a hand in that project (The Craft Book, I think). Always nice when fan endeavors connect and crossover!

Look good, this will be great to watch when you release it. Are you going to do a "Behind the scean" video to tell the story about putting this together???

Excellent. I love the dirt and grain added to the space footage.

I love that too. In a way it makes it look more professional and stylized than other fan films. Reminds me of Tarantino films. Retro looking not old.

I had forgotten about this being completed. I am glad I discovered this thread again. I just joined the Facebook group. I am a huge Superman fan so I bought the issue of Starlog sometime in the 90s because Superman IV was on the cover. I been fascinated about Yorktown since than. At the time fan films where an idea I had never heard of.

Yes - the age of the footage adds character, even though you want the best possible quality.

The fact also that this is the lost adventure of George Takei as Lt Cmdr Sulu really makes this unique, plus you have some great people working behind the scenes.

This also one of the most earliest known efforts to make a fan film, so thank you for reviving it.

It really does seem like a lost Sulu because, I believe, all the other actors are playing new characters. There is no recasting so this feels like it could be a true spin-off.

That is correct. No iconic roles were recast for this. All of the characters in the short film are new, with the exception of Sulu. Although Admiral Nogura was never featured on screen in any of the movies, he was mentioned in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. This fan-film will be that character's first appearance on screen (played by James Shigeta).
