Yet another Star Wars movie re-release

This time in 3-D.

This doesn't really surprise anyone, does it?

The Hollywood Reporter, er, reported....
Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set to re-release the entire "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Though the 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas was purportedly waiting until there were enough 3D screens available to make the release a sizable enough event.

Fox, which released all six of the original "Star Wars" films, would also release the 3D versions.

Part 1, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock in the early months of 2012. After that, each of the films would be released in order at the same time each consecutive year, depending on how well the first re-release does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas personally overseeing the process to make sure each one is as perfected as possible. Lucas has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" was ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough in 3D television technology. With Samsung penetrating the market with 50,000-plus 3D-equipped televisions, and Sony planning to send its version to market in the coming months, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the classic films by the time the new 3D series runs its course.

Lucas is purportedly queuing up the theatrical re-releases as a lead-in to the ultimate home viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to all other 3D media.

Perfect time to re-release a completely redone Prequel Trilogy, George! Why stop at 3-D? Go ask your Clone Wars team to get to work on the rewrite.

...we can dream, can't we? :rommie:

Wrong move. ANH should've been the first to be rereleased since it's much more popular than TPM.

So this 3D conversion is finally happening, eh? Well, I'll probably end up checking it out, even though I don't think it's a good idea.

Unless Lucas has figured out some kind of massive improvements to the process, 3D isn't nearly worth the trouble unless it was actually shot that way. Unless he's sending James Cameron and his amazing camera rigs back in time to 1977, that's not going to be the case.

What makes you think he can't? The "Coalition of Directors with inflated egos" will call Zemeckis to borrow a delorean.

Interesting. I know he's been talking about doing this for some time now. Don't think I'll be seeing it though.

Wow, yeah, or better yet, don't bother with the PT at all. The box-office returns for the series will certainly be fascinating.

As for myself, I'll gladly see ANH and ESB in well-done 3D. Jedi, I'm not so sure... kinda doubt it.

He has. It's called taking your long sweet time, and spending enough money. :p

I doubt these will really affect the box office at all. Much like the re-release of Avatar didn't have much affect, and a Star Wars fan with his name being Yoda telling George Lucas to go away is amusing to me.

Not a SW fan, are you?

Never underestimate the power of the Dark Side...
And, never underestimate the power of SW fans!

When A NEW HOPE SE opened in 1997, it made more than 100 million (!!!), and it was the time of home video entertainment already!

The 6 films will make some money. Hopefully enough so that the live action TV show will get made finally!

Cannot wait!

I'm a huge Star Wars fan, don't know where you got that I implied I wasn't. I simply stated I find the anti-Lucas sentiment from fans amusing considering without him we would never have had Star Wars in the first place, and no before anyone jumps all over me I'm not a Lucas apologist either.

I still don't think these 3D re-leases will have much impact on the box office during a year that will have such mega blockbusters all through it. My point on "Avatar:Special Edition" still stands.

Just remember the SW Special Editions in 1997 made $100 million each or so!

I look forward to seeing Star Wars 3-D... even the Prequels :p

Remember too though that was because they hadn't been in theaters for a while and because there were new never before scenes added. If these come out during 2012 they will be up against heavy competition. I'm not saying they won't make money, I'm saying they won't have much impact on the box office.

I think the Battle of Endor would be amazing in 3D and worth the price of admission.

I would say 'damn you', George Lucas, but I want to give him my money anyways. I might skip Clones, but I will be watching all of the rest of the movies.
