Yet another re-watch - and what strikes me...

I'm only on episode 5 of my god knows how many times re-watch of DS9 and I've been thinking about why its this particular series I come back to time and time again,

I'm a Star Trek fan clearly, and I love most of the shows, but its only DS9 that holds my attention throughout the series,

There are wonderful episodes in TNG, but there is also a lot of filler. VOY was just lower quality overall, and the newer shows I will only judge properly when they have finished. ENT was cancelled before it could achieve what it set out to do.

Its the tone and character in DS9 that is so impressive.

Every character plays an important role and has real development over the seven years, even secondary and tertiary ones.

It also just a more adult orientated tone, which as I've got older (41 now) I've appreciated more and more.

I could go into more detail about all of this, but just wanted to offer some preliminary thoughts.

Now I don't dislike DS9 by any stretch, I'm currently rewatching it with my fiancé (in exchange for me watching Doctor Who with her) but there's definitely a lot of filler episodes in DS9. Easily as many as there are in any other series.

The writers tried to do something different that, for the most part, worked really, really well. But the episodes about politics on Bajor are incredibly dull (in my opinion). Thankfully they stop focusing on that aspect in later series.

I feel that filler episodes are more a product of the current day rather than the sixties and seventies where each and every episode meant something and was important rather than stretching a storyline out like a piece of elastic!

There are no filler episodes in the '90s Trek shows. An episode doesn't have to contribute to some overarching tale to justify existing.

And the good thing about a "filler" episode (whether it is or not) is that you can watch it when you have 45 minutes free, and not feel a need to binge the rest of it.

The 90s Treks are very much full of fillers to be honest. The Picard trapped in a turbo-lift with the children for example...

Nothing really happened. Picard is trapped in an elevator with a group of children.
And I DO pay attention. Picking up great deals of minutiae from many shows and series!

I had a first-time viewing thread a few years ago where I gave my thoughts after each episode, but I fell off near the end of season two. I've only recently (the past couple of weeks) started watching again. At this point, DS9 is the only Star Trek series I have any real interest in watching.

That's a memorable and funny episode that really humanized Picard and provided lots of humor and some serious action stuff. Not every episode can be space battles with Romulans.

Exactly. In case you weren't around or weren't paying attention, that's pretty much how TV worked back then.

That was episodic TV and there were positives to having episodes that had a beginning, middle, and end. Most story arcs these days have this big mystery they don't solve until the end of the season and it feels like either a slog to get through or they reveal everything too late and the finales feel rushed. Actually today's story arcs make me appreciate shows like Farscape, DS9, and Babylon 5 even more because they were able to juggle the big picture series arcs with individual unique episodes.

Since I got most things in order considering defect DVD.s and such and could watch the whole show from start to finish, I've watched all of DS9 five times and it still feels fresh and interesting to me.

I think it's because of the characters and their development and the story itself.

The story takes us down a winding road with sharp turns and unexpected events.

It started like a decent spin-off series to TNG with an interesting premise about a space station near a wormhole and some good TNG-style characters but became much more.

It developed from the Cardassian-Bajoran conflict to exploration of the Gamma Quadrant, the encounter with The Dominion and their plans for the Alpha Quadrant, the conflict with the Klingons, the Cardassians joining the Dominion, the war, Dukat's schemes and all that.

it also had likeable characters who developed and became more than they were in the beginning, their relations, friendship and such.

The main characters were great but the series also had recurring characters who were interesting, like Garak, Quark, Nog, Rom, Dukat, Winn, Gowron, Martok, Casidy Yates, Vic Fontaine etc. They also developed and became interesting.

DS9 may have been a bit darker than the other series but it also had it's litghter moments, it never became depressive.

If I should criticize anything, then it's that there were too many "mirror universe" episodes. When I watch them, it's like "OK, let's get this over and go back to the real story again".

The same with those episode with Sisko being some author locked into some institution, writing about DS9.

And Jadzia shouldn't have been killed off, she could have left for some posting on the Enterprise or so. Ezri could have been her sister.

And Gowron shouldn't have been killed off! What a waste! :wah:

But the sum of everything is that DS9 is an interesting and exciting series and still is, even after have watched it a few times

Even when I watch the series again and actually knows what is going to happen, it still feels interesting and exciting in many ways.

As for TNG, it was a great series (and still is great to watch) but each season has some bum episodes, most notably "Shades Of Gray" and "Lessons". A long time since I watched any of those.

VOY had a great premise and interesting characters. The first season was good, then second season great but then it started to slide in the third season with too many bum episodes. Then it became the Seven Of Nine show

I love the tangents that this thread has gone off on.
I finished the rewatch a while ago.
I actually might watch some non-trek for my next rewatch.....Lost?

Having decided that Farrell was leaving the show, I think it was a good idea that Jadzia would die and be replaced by another host for Dax. They've got this race with the interesting ability to pass memories forward after death, they'd be silly not to show it on the screen. (Their mistake was not negotiating the use of Farrell's image and voice in Season 7, allowing Jadzia to be shown in flashbacks and photos and possible one-shot appearance in the finale, etc.)
