X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Casting, Rumors, Pics till release)

Michael Fassbender is so going to rock this film. Also, hearing Matthew Vaughn's comments about the leaked photo was refreshing. I seriously cannot wait for this film!

Quotes from Matthew Vaughn regarding the leaked photo, the tone of the film, and expectations:

“I freaked out on them yesterday. I don’t know where the hell that came from. I don’t think it’s a Fox image. It’s not a pre-approved image. When I found out, I said, what the fuck is this shit, and Fox is running around trying to figure out what happened as well. I agree. It’s like a bad photoshop, which maybe it was by someone. It didn’t reflect the movie. I was shocked when I saw it. I was like ‘Jesus Christ’…

“Imagine the Cuban Missile crisis and discovering that mutants exist, both at the same time.” … “The actors are so great. Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are very very hard to replace. When I’m watching Fassbender and McAvoy you just think, it sort of reminds me of Daniel Craig doing Bond, you kind of forget there were other people playing him. And that’s what I feel about these two.”

The interviewer mentioned that the leaked photo reminded them of Fantastic Four, and so Vaughn retorted:

“It’s definitely more serious and more realistic, and I think that’s something that had to happen. That’s my feeling about the world we live in right now. I think the glossy colorful superhero film sorta had its day. I think Batman Begins started it, Dark Knight, dare I say Kick-Ass was fun and it had some real pop to it, but at the same time we grounded it in reality as much as possible. I think that’s what the audience wants. And that why that image is more Fantastic Four than it is X-Men. And I say that with all due respect to the Fantastic Four team. That was then and this is now. It’s a different time. I mean, look at me — I’m not exactly mister light.”

Also, how Vaughn approached the film, and what it means for the series continuity:

I’d say this is more like Casino Royale than [JJ Abrams] Star Trek. If you think about it, Casino Royale just totally rebooted Bond — they kept what they wanted and got rid of what didn’t work. You sort of saw Bond become a double O for the first time and yet it didn’t seem to matter [what they changed]. I think my rule is to make a stand alone movie that is as good as possible and do as many nods and winks towards the comics and the other films, but not get tied up in knots worrying about that. It’s sort of a stand-alone movie in my mind with a reboot being a real reboot. Because if you’re a stickler for continuity, in X3 when you see Patrick Stewart…. well, I don’t want to give away anything about the plot but we’ve been as respectful of the other movies and comics as we I can feasibly can be without compromising the story.”

I really like what Vaughn had to say. I'm really pumped for this film, and I'm looking forward to it most out of any superhero movie coming out this year. I think Vaughn is superbly talented and the perfect man to direct this film. Click here for more.

Hmm. After reading that, I have to admit my interest in this movie has gone up quite a bit. Love the 60s setting and the more serious tone he seems to be going for.

Here's hoping that's really what we'll get, and that it's not just a bunch of dumb, flashy action scenes thrown together again like in the last two.

Yeah this one is looking very promising. It nice for me too because I have not been really following its progress to closely so it will be hopefully a nice surprise.

I think thats the best way to approach the continuity to this. It couldbe seen as a prequel to the other films. Just as long as you don't over examine the details to closely.

Of course if its successful I would love to see a whole new series continue showing the X-men's history through out the 70s, 80s, etc. If that means ignoring the previous films... so be it!

The only question I have about the costumes is the belts and buckles ( same for Caps, actually). Do the serve a purpose or is it a case of LCDN ( looks cool does nothing) like the pouches and straps of the 90s comics. Are there packbacks and parachutes involved?

Amen! Jackson Archer you are my new best friend! I think when he was cast a lot of folks didn't know who Fassbender was. They do now :)

Everybody and their grandma that has a blog is now posting these photos, links, and articles, and reposting, and copying, yadda yadda. Now Fox, how about a website to put all this together?

Yay!

^ I'm a big Fassbender fan too and was excited with his casting as Magneto. I understand the hesitations fans have with this film...I'm willing to give it a chance. There are things to be excited about. I can't wait for the first trailer, whenever it comes.

What do you mean 'could be'? It is a prequel, hence no Cyclops, Ice-Man, Angel etc

Yes, but Vaughn appears to be suggesting in interviews that he doesn't want to be restricted creatively by what happened in the previous (subsequent?) movies? I suppose he feels that, for example, if he has to insert a scene that clashes with the flashbacks in The Last Stand or the bits with Prof X in Wolverine, then he'll do it, prequelitis bedamned.

I should explain things...again. Josh Schwartz started writing an adaption of Jeff Parker's First Class comic book. Then things changed when Fox contacted Bryan Singer who wrote a treatment focusing on the friendship of Xavier and Lensherr and how that deteriorated. Singer incorporated elements of the now defunct "X-Men Origins: Magneto" movie into his treatment which was then turned into a first draft by Jamie Moss.

The title is a misconception. It is more symbolic than meaning Charles first class. I should think the non casting of the actual original X-Men would be clear now. This is clearly a prequel to the movie franchise. It always was meant to be. The fact that people think it is an adaption of the comic is a media misconception.

Professor X: "Fascinating."

Note that Beast - 3rd from right, glasses, tie and maroon jumper - is not yet blue and furry. This should keep happy those who complained about him appearing fleetingly in this form in X2.
If that's Beast, then he's still wrong.
Beast's mutant ability has nothing to do with his blue fur, it's his size, agility and overly large hands & feet. Hank McCoy should still look like a Gorilla sized man even before the fur. He was also as hairy as Wolverine before the blue hair too.

^ Yeah...that's probably not going to be shown in a movie. As I've stated before many times literal adaptions of characters are extremely rare and creative liberties are always taken. Comic fans just have to accept this.

I accept the no blue fur, not that he's still physically wrong. That's not creative liberty, that's poor attention to detail. There's no reason why he shouldn't have latex hands & feet or bulk up his form.
