I could see Cannonball working really well from a cinematic perspective. I think Rahne/Wolfsbane could make for an interesting character, the shy religious werewolf isn't the most common of tropes. Magik would be insane but I'd love to see it. Would they put Magneto in as headmaster?

They specifically targeted 1972.

Why not go back a couple more years and save the Brotherhood or Kennedy?

Trask would have zero traction trying to sell a sentinel program to a mutant president.

But Kennedy's term would have been up by 1973, even had he survived the assassination attempt in Dallas. Unless the US constitution is different in the X-Men verse.

When I was watching this movie and heard that Kennedy had been "one of them" I of course immediately wondered what his mutant power could be. And just as immediately I heard someone deep in a trekbbs thread about this movie say "his dick". And then I started laughing into my popcorn but I'm sad that no one has said such a thing yet because it means I don't have prescient powers. Or maybe they only apply to ME which uhh.. is quite useless.

So.... the Secret Service helping to cover up his crippling back pain... was really them covering up his mutancy!

If it's any consolation, I jokingly had the same thought when Magneto mentioned JFK was a mutant.

If it's any more of a consolation, so did some of the people making the movie:

“The notion was that Trask was a little bit involved in the assassination of JFK. I’m just telling you back story, it’s not in the movie, but Trask identified that JFK was a mutant, and then the people that wanted JFK killed for all their political reasons, whoever it actually was who actually killed him, they were motivated by the fact that this guy was a mutant. So Eric got wind of that, and tried to stop them, but there were too many of them.

“We talked about what JFK’s power was for quite a bit, and my answer for you may be a bit obvious and not that smart, but it’s a telepathy, a mind-control, the ability to persuade people to do things. There were other theories from other people that were slightly more… tawdry.”

If they ever decide to do a Magneto standalone movie, then it needs to be the story discussed here about his involvement with the JFK assassination.

I don't know if you've seen the viral videos associated with the film or not, but it does give you a little glimpse into the JFK assassination backstory:

Cannonball - the mutant with the mental tick that he had to say "I'm invulnerable while I'm blastin" at least once per minute.

One of a number of "Claremont-isms" that CBR recently spotlighted. This particular one is number 3.;)

Some other repetitive quotes which occasionally turned up in X-MEN or Claremont's MARADA THE SHE-WOLF include ''I'll tear the living heart out of your breast,'' ''Have a care, Wind-Rider,'' ''scrap'' instead of ''fight,'' plus narration regarding ''the outcome never in doubt.''

I assume "I'm the best there is at what I do but what I do best isn't very nice" is a Claremont-ism? I always liked that one.

A.V. Club reports on why Rogue was cut from the film. Looks like I was right about what Rogue would've done if she wasn't cut from the film: She would come to the aid of Kittty after Logan accidentally injures her.

While it's unfortunate she was cut, I think they made the right choice. A lengthy mission for Charles, Erik, and Bobby rescuing Rogue in the future would mess up the pacing of the film, especially considering the meat of the story takes place in 1973. One last adventure for Charles and Erik would've been nice but it's not necessary.

Question remains, however, where would they be rescuing Rogue from (they're in remote China) and from whom? The Sentinels take no prisoners.

She was being held (experimented on?) at the former School for Gifted Youngsters. (Since taken over for the purpose of conducting horrible research.)

It sounds like a cool scene and it would've been nice to have given Paquin more to do. But I think they probably called it right in deleting the sequence. I don't think it would've aided the film's pacing.

And would've lowered the stakes... Kitty bleeding out, that was a great way to keep the tension high.

Agreed, I think the scene would have hurt the film/ the pacing of the film. Though perhaps on the blu-ray they can do what they did for X-Men 1.5 DVD and reinsert the deleted scene. So if you want you can have it in.
