“What a gas!” the actor enthuses while in conversation with The Huffington Post. “I mean, Patrick Stewart and I have been have just been playing Waiting For Godot throughout England and in the West End of London. So, we've stayed in touch.

“We can't believe it [laughs]. I thought these were [Michael] Fassbender and [James] McAvoy’s parts, but – no, no – we're back. We’ll give them a run for their money. I mean, I haven't read the script, so I don't know how much we've got to do.

“But, to be back in that world, and for Bryan [Singer] to be doing it – with all the success he's had in the meantime – it's wonderful. Wonderful."

As for Fassbender’s take on Magneto in X-Men: First Class, McKellen has nothing but praise: “I thought he was exactly that: first class. Excellent...

“I thought he was better than me. But, we weren't quite playing the same character because he was so much younger than me.”

Yeah, Sir Ian's comments particularly about not seeing a script yet, would indicate to me that he resigned because Singer was back in the director's chair. Of course this is just personal speculation on my part, but I wouldn't be surprise if that was the case. Probably the same with Sir Patrick as well.

Probably that mixed with having fun in the role and having fun being with Patrick Stewart.

Ian McKellen just seems to like having fun while acting.

James Marsden, Halle Berry and more are in talks to return for X-Men: Days of Future Past! :D

According to the link, many of the actors from the original trilogy are willing to return because of the goodwill established by Singer's involvement. So, as Admiral_Young speculated, actors are returning mostly because of Singer's involvement. Which is music to my ears, and another reason why I knew Singer coming on-board to direct was a good thing for multiple reasons.

Gahhh, I'm so excited for this movie!

I haven't been paying much attention, but is this movie supposed to explain the messed up continuity between First Class and the other movies?

I suspect some of these could be small parts, cameos. If most of the movie shows the younger cast. But it still will be fantastic. It hard to imagine most of them agreeing to play small roles in this for any other director.

EDIT

Now that I read the article, it says everything I just did! LOL
It makes perfect sense.

No doubt it will be cameos too. Probably getting everyone together for even 14 seconds is a scheduling nightmare.

Just a question, I've read DOFP marks the return of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult.
But what about the other characters from FC- Emma Frost, Banshee, Havok, Angel Salvadore, Riptide, Azazel, and of course the ever beautiful Rose Byrne as Moira.

Any word on them?

I would like to see Alan Cummings as Nightcrawler again. It was implied we saw both of his parents in First Class.

I, too, would love for Alan Cummings to return as Nightcrawler but I seriously doubt this will happen because he hated the make-up. That's why he didn't return for The Last Stand.

With all of these Singer vets wanting to return, I keep hoping that Kelsey Grammer will also return because Matthew Vaughn.

I'm not entirely sure now but I think January Jones was contracted for a sequel. The others I'm not entirely sure about. I could see Rose Bryne returning. I'd prefer if Jones was recast though. Emma of course being recruited into Magneto's "Brotherhood" at the end of First Class.

Grammer is probably a makeup issue too. Even if he had no problem with it before, would he spend all that getting it on for a small part? Hard to say.
