X-Men: Apocalypse announced for May 2016

That's the thing though. Since coming back to X-Men, Singer has said his original plan was to have the first 2 movies be about Wolverine, but have X3 be about Scott. Well, Singer left X3 pre-production to go do Superman Returns and James Marsden (Cyclops' actor) went with him. Hence the cobbled together Phoenix story we got out of X3, with Logan being in Scott's place for Jean's lover and killer.

Ehhhhhh seems awfully convenient to sing that tune now. Didn't he have a basic storyline outlined before he left X3 in which Scott's role was just as small?

Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that everything we saw in X3 (the Cure story line, death of Professor X, and Phoenix) were all going to be in Singer's version of X3. No, in that Marsden was supposed to take the lead role. Since Singer (at the time) realized he didn't really give Scott much to do in X1 and he was brainwashed and MIA throughout X2.

Singer left the project, and Brett Ratner was brought in 3 weeks before they were supposed to start shooting, and has to wrangle together the script on the fly. Marsden was shooting Superman Returns and X3 at the same time, but most of his scheduling was dedicated to SR, so Fox had Cyclops killed off. This resulted in X3 being more Wolverine centric, again. Singer also wanted Ice Man's actor to come to SR and be Jimmy Olsen, but Shawn Ashmore said no. Good on him too.

I was sort of hoping that Scott was merely stunned and was captured by Sinister to lead us naturally into the Cable / Apocalypse / potential Jean resurrection and/or clone / Marauders story. I was ambivalent about First Class in that I rather like the Hellfire Club and plonking them in the sixties rather prevented their re-use but I was probably more annoyed at the intimation that Banshee died off camera before DoFP. I was rather hoping he was going to be War. Part of me wishes they'd stuck with the comic villains so we had plausible options for Famine and Pestilence.

Scott works as an angst-ridden teen. Jubilee worked better as a teen cameo though - although I would have liked her to get an action scene in X2 or X3.

Well, they could always do a new version of the Hellfire Club in the present day. Haven't there been several different Hellfire Clubs in the comics?

For me, the worst part of First Class using the Hellfire Club was just how badly they wrote Emma. I mean, it would have been difficult to do her worse, and as someone who likes the character in the comics what the movie did with her was just pathetic. She was basically just eye candy for Shaw, who also did psychic stuff for him. None of the comic version's personality and not even anything to make the character interesting in the movie. Its the biggest problem with Singer's X-Films. They use a lot of X-Men characters as basically background props (like Colossus in X3), and only a chosen few get character and development.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the X-Men films a lot, but they do have some problems that have been with the franchise since the first X-Men movie.

I didn't hate her as much as most people, but Emma was definitely very bland in FC. January Jones is great in The Last Man on Earth and won a bunch of awards for Mad Men, so I don't think whatever happened there was do to a lack of talent.
I do agree with you about Singer using popular characters, but then not doing anything with them. At least this time he does appear to be doing something interesting with more of the characters.

Yeah the failure to develop Rogue after X1 except as Iceman's squeeze was tiresome. Give the poor woman some super strength for goodness sake! At least then we'd have cared if she'd taken the cure and we'd have the whole boo hoo i have a split personality thing going on to make her more fun. I assume that Anna was unavailable during DOFP for more than a cameo. Rogue punching out a sentinel after being experimented on would have been frickin' coool.

Rogue Cut.
Apologies for any confusion; I was talking about the Rogue cut. What i mean was, she just gets rescued and gurns a lot. She wasn't involved in any set pieces with special effects such as flying and kicking ass. I wondered if that was down to her availability for anything more complex.

I actually kind of like her not having the Ms. Marvel powers, but I do wish she'd "borrowed" powers more often.

You don't even need Rogue to have someone elses' powers to be awesome, just look at the X-Men Evolution version of her.

True but although she trained with the team in X3 she didn't really display any... training. She didn't even do anything useful with Colossus strength. I thought she was used to great effect in X1 but they took too long to toughen her up. Still, if Angel and Jubille can show up 10 years early (I'm assuming Jubilee was a post grad for the sake of simplicity) then who knows what the villains have planned for Rogue!

They could've easily just had her gain magnetic powers from her exposure to Magneto in the first film and have her use them in later movies. After all, she had magnetic powers in the Age of Apocalypse storyline.

I know the Scarlet Witch (or possibly Polaris) was mentioned in the last movie. Does she appear in this one? If so, I hope they give her probability hexes. Red telekinesis seems redundant in the X-Men franchise.

Wanda is an MCU Exclusive for now, I think.

Wanda was mentioned in the Rogue Cut of DOFP. I could totally see Wanda being used to Deus Ex a way to beat Apocalypse. Keeping her out of the advertisements as much as possible.

Quicksilver/Aaron Tayler-Johnson is contracted to appear in 2 more movies, so the rights for the Maximoff Twins is likely still being shared.

Another sister besides the one we saw was mentioned. Not Wanda by name. The implication was quite clear to fans, but that's as far as it went, an allusion to the character rather than an actual use of her.

What Kevin Feige Thinks Of Quicksilver's Future At Marvel

Whatever the actual legal agreement is, I surmise that going forward Fox will be using Quicksilver and Disney will be using Scarlet Witch, and not vice versa.

Wanda has used her probability manipulation to resurrect people in the comics albeit with pretty devastating medium term consequences. I was expecting her to bring him back in some future movies, maybe using the power of a cosmic cube and then a sequel movie could be based around the consequences of her actions. Dream sequences like those in the Wolverine can work really well to keep the actor involved in the meantime. At least it's tricky to guess what his ultimate fate could be at present.

The X-men has more than enough characters floating around to leave out Wanda completely but if the rights are potentially time-limited it seems a shame to waste that opportunity completely.
