Wow, I don't generally watch wrestling (checked it out recently for The Rock stuff), so I'm just finding out about Edge now. What a lovely goodbye speech. Really made me feel like I took him for granted. I just always sort of assumed he'd be wrestling forever and never thought of singling him out for praise or lamenting his eventual retirement.
I guess one reason is because he didn't have a lot of famous on on one matches like many of the best wrestlers, but I realized recently he's a big reason why some of my all-time favourite wrestling matches were tag team matches.
My favourites were his tag team match with Rey Misterio against Benoit and Angle at No Mercy 2002 (the moves in this were all executed with such unbelievable smoothness and style) and of course the TLC matches, particularly the second one at Wrestlemania X-7.
He and Christian were such a magnificent tag team. I loved their comedy stuff so much, especially when they teamed up with Kurt Angle. Edge and Christian were one of the big reasons why my favourite period of the WWF was 2000-2002.
His retirement announcement is sad, but also bittersweet. I'm just happy to know he's doing this so he can retire in relatively good health instead of wrestling until he's physically broken down to a horrendous degree.
He's one of those wrestlers that can make me proud to be Canadian, very much in the Bret Hart mold as a brilliant tag team wrestler who somewhat surprisingly evolved into an equally brilliant singles wrestler. As much as I loved the comedy stuff, I think my favourite performances of his were the stuff he did as a heel champion in 2006.
That was about the time I pretty much stopped being a big WWF fan, and like Lance Storm in WCW, he was one of the few bright spots in a promotion very much on the decline (in WWF, quality-wise, not financially like WCW).
His "sex celebration" thing with Lita was insane and ridiculous, but undeniably a marvelous spectacle, and his performance at the
"One Night Stand" 2006 pay per view was one of the greatest 'slimy bastard' performances I've ever seen.
Him costing John Cena the title (to raucous
"Thank you, Edge!" chants) and dry humping Beulah as he pinned her was a thing of beauty.
