WTF, TAS getting Blu-Ray and DS9 not?

TAS, animated though it may be, was done entirely on film. So it was releasable on HD from the get-go.

DS9, on the other hand, would require all of its special effects to be redone from scratch (since all editing was done on videotape) if it could ever be aired in HD.

So that's why TAS is coming out now. It didn't require any remastering or any new effects.

Yeah, at least remaster the 1st 3 seasons; I would love to upgrade my DS9 collection in Hi Def. They're still great to watch. I can't speak for the rest of the seasons... not in my house.

It sucks but at least we are getting another 22 episodes of Trek in HD along with hopefully the Wrath of Khan Director's Cut. I'd rather have DS9 (as well as VOY and TMP Director's Cut) but I'll take what I can get.

The entire show would have to be put back together from the original film elements. Not just the effects. A massive undertaking.

Ah, it was the Holosuite scenes, yes? I knew those were gonna come back and bite them in the butt!

(funny!)

Some of Our Own had prescient and logical comments...a while ago
I loved DS9, but, sadly, I must agree with these Posts, last May.

think we'll see The Animated Series on Blu-ray before we see either Deep Space Nine or Voyager. The cost outlay for such a project would be far less.

Don't be. It's been said by so many, that the costs don't outweigh the sales. Never will. There is NO reason to be even 1% of cautiously optimistic. Hell, actual remasters of the movies are not in the cards, simply because they will never sell enough to justify the costs.
TNG Remaster has NOT sold well enough, and to remaster DS9 would be a lot more costly then TNG ever was, with DS9 having a more limited market.

CBS isn't about pleasing fans. They're not sitting there thinking 'you know, those Niners are so cool, let's do them a favour even though it's gonna costs us shitloads of dollars'.

I know I'm sounding harsh and like a d***. But the thing is, this has been made clear so often, and still people are saying 'it might happen'.

No. Simply, clearly........ no.

But they still HAVE the film elements somewhere in a vault, don't they? Like they did with TOS and TNG?

I'm sure they do. But that probably isn't the question. The question would be, would we make our money back more quickly doing this project (the remastering) or some other project?

I'd be amazed if sales of TAS on Blu-ray cover the costs of the remastering. If it sells more than a few thousand units worldwide, I'll eat my shorts. That CBS would rather waste its time on TAS than remaster and clean up TMP is a tremendous kick in the nether regions for fans. And to do it in the 50th anniversary year makes it even more painful.

You are all missing the point. The remastered DVD's were released in 2007, by then the industry had already been scanning and preserving masters of film and TV shows n HD to "future proof" their libraries. It's likely this work was already done years ago when the episodes were originally scanned by CBS, so it's not really costing them anything to issue this release.

UPDATE: Just as I write this I look on the Memory-Alpha wiki... yup the show was mastered at 1080p back in 2007, and you can even see "More Trouble, More Tribbles" on the Season 2 blu-ray box set of TOS. My guess is this disc set will simply port over the bonus features from the DVD set.

Yeah, that is lame. Hope they use the money they're expecting from the new series and their streaming service to remaster DS9. Easily the best series.

Mike Okuda will soon tweet "the best way to get DS9 on bluray is to purchase TAS on bluray."

I don't think that will change anything. Deep Space Nine will eventually be remastered by CBS simply to have it in their library for future HD broadcast/streaming. The question is whether Blu-ray will even be a viable format, or even exist when that decision is made.

If anything CBS could simply hold off until the debut of Star Trek on CBS All Access... if that show does well, and CBS sees Trek as a viable, money making property again, then TPB will make that call and remaster both DS9 and Voyager, just to have the entire Trek library in high definition.

Given the fairly apathetic reaction Blu-ray received with the general public (Blu-ray truly is this generation's Laser Disc), it's doubtful TOS, TNG, or ENT were ever going to move enough units to justify the cost of their remasters. What CBS needed was for those shows to be viable commodities in syndication packages, but given the evolving nature of television right now, that never materialized. CBS' best bet is to see CBS All Access take off. With enough subscribers, that can justify the expense of series remasters.

I thought maybe TAN would have a chance in JAPAN, but, if TOS was panned...

"Japan is a country that loves science fiction and fantasy programing, their television staple includes few shows without some fantasy element. Star trek: the Next Generation aired there soon after it’s release in America, and was quite popular. However, the original series (Re-broadcast in Japan around the 1970s) had fairly poor ratings, and it lasted only a few weeks on the air. With the Popularity of “The Next Generation” in Japan mounting, Paramount encouraged Nippon TV to try the original series again, but it was still wildly unpopular. The reason? An article in Geek Magazine revealed that many young Japanese Trekkies, unfamiliar with the original series, dismissed it as a poorly done copy of The Next Generation! An old rumor in the Trek fandom states that, in Japan, the original series was called “The Adventures of Captain Sulu” This is, of course, false."
