WTF, TAS getting Blu-Ray and DS9 not?

Since CBS is making a ton of money, I'd say they have a better handle on the situation than you do. Did you ever stop to think those streaming rights aren't exactly generating a ton of cash? CBS likely has a whole department that does nothing but crunch numbers on no longer produced properties, to figure out just how to make money off of them.

No, I never stopped to think that. thank you. :nyah:

Seriously though, why the status quo defense? Of course there will be diminishing returns if there is no capital investment.

CBS has a very real opportunity to tie Star Trek to the CBS AllAccess platform. If they really want to get it off the ground, it is going to require more than 10-13 weeks of product per year to get most of us to commit. This is a way to boost the new platform AND make a long term investment in the franchise. Otherwise, most of us are going to cancel that bill as soon as we get our fix and then sign up again the following year. And frankly, that is my plan at this point. I don't see the value in CBS AllAccess beyond DSC. Although, I am cranking through Goodwife in an act of good faith.

That being said, I don't expect a TNG style upgrade at this point. But again, I think these discussions are worth having. The 2013 market is not the same as the 2017 market. And the 2025 market will be far different as well. The one constant will be HIGH DEFINITION.

It's an upscale, and a shoddy one at that.

If you think that looks "soooo good", you should check out the other shows on Blu-ray :p

Actually, after seen TNG and ENT on Bluray, I decided to watch the BRD of TOS, and I find this amusing surprise. Maybe it doesn't win any prize, but the upscaling work looks good to me.

It isn't a defense, it is just the way it is. CBS has likely come to a realization that capital investment isn't going to generate more in the way of revenue.

They already 300+ episodes of Star Trek in HD on All-Access. I doubt it is driving subscribers to the platform. If it was, then there would be no need for Discovery to begin with. They also have reruns of Big Bang Theory and other shows much bigger than Star Trek reruns. Star Trek simply isn't the big fish in the pond anymore.

But, there's also likely the realization that the other two shows (DS9, VOY) are in good enough shape that they don't need to be remastered. I just watched "Favor the Bold" on Netflix, on a 50" 4K TV via the Xbox One S, and while it isn't HD quality it is still watchable.

Yeah that is half the problem. Does anyone here REALLY want to drop £350 on the DS9 Blu Rays as they are released? Maybe a lot of people will wait until the whole set sells for £50 - but no-one except Amazon makes on that!

The fact is the rise of Netflix etc. has seen the cost of home entertainment drop like a stone, not only is DS9 unlikely to make back its remastering cost in any circumstances, but the climate at the minute couldn't be worse for it.

Agreed. It's my favorite show and yet I know after shelling out $100 per season for the dvds I would never spend that much again for the same show

The problem with those HD episodes on AllAccess is that they are also available on Netflix, Hulu, BBC America, etc. I am talking about leaving SD versions of the shows on all platforms but only having HD on
AllAccess. This is what would keep me. $5.99 per month is a far cry from the $700 I paid for TNG on DVD. A mistake I and many others, will not make again. Unfortunately for CBS, consumers aren't as dumb as we once were.

I am ASKING CBS to TRICK US. CONVINCE ME CBS.

Big Bang Theory? I get that over the air every damn night. Hardly worth a monthly subscription. I know this is just my personal opinion, but I remain to be convinced to leave this recurring fee on my balance sheets.

Look, my point is that if CBS wants to be Star Trek Central, then DO IT (get it?). Why the half-hearted attempt. What will season 1 of Discovery cost? $30m? $50m? MORE? The show has been in full pre-production for months. We all know what the DS9, VOY, and ENT pilots costs, and that was 15-20+ years ago.

No one will. I'm not paying $5.99 a month for a Good Wife spinoff. At the same time, I wouldn't keep any of my streaming services year round for just Star Trek. Having DS9 and VOY in HD aren't going to send people rushing to pay CBS year round for access.

Twenty year old TV shows are a niche product.

God I want to take you out for a drink. lol.

Off topic - if this were NBC, I might be singing a different tune. I like their back catalogue much better. I am not even sure of any CBS shows I watched growing up or since. Straight to the point - I want Golden Girls on demand. Oh..and HD DS9 and VOY.

DS9 HD exclusive to All-Access would never work. People are more inclined to purchase physical discs and download digital movies. They're not going to pay for All-Access when they can easily pirate it, Blu-ray files are much bigger and more of a hassle to get so people feel more obliged to pay for them.

Good enough is why we don't even have 1080p broadcast TV.
4k UHD will be pretty niche. Around 2022 I think it will become mainstream as 8k which is technically UHD-Phase 2.

The upscale of Trials and Tribble-ations looks just like the DVD to me... muddy crud that clearly came from a video tape source.
