WTF moments in TOS & TAS....

Never understood why they went to the trouble to make that nice sign for the Enterprise bridge, but never got a proper camera angle for us to read it (certainly not on 1960s TV screens).

At a 1984 lecture by Leonard Nimoy that I attended, someone in the audience actually asked him, "What did that sign by the bridge doors say?" Nimoy was dumbfounded.

Clearly, Gene was a visionary and foresaw those replica plaques Eaglemoss would sell 55 years later.

When Kirk is getting a back rub at the start of Shore Leave and he tells Spock to dig in harder but then realises that it wasn't Spock giving the back rub but a yeoman. Kirk then tells her to stop and looks embarrassed.

And when Spock has to fuck or die in Amok Time but just rolls around in the dirt with Kirk and then he is ok. He doesn't get T'Pring or anyone else.

I know the real world explanation is that both episodes were written by Theodore Sturgeon who likely wanted to add a gay subtext. But for those who don't ship K/S, what is supposed to be happening?

Have you read Blish's version of Amok Time? I'm assuming that was closer to Sturgeon's version and it had Spock demanding Kirk's death instead of pleading for Kirk's life.
I don't understand the backrub thing being K/S though. Like I just thought it was a locker room things where jocks get massages and there's nothing else to it - although I'd never call Spock a jock, Kirk yes.

Thanks, this makes a lot more sense.

Kirk's expression changes instantly when he realises it's not Spock rubbing his back. If Kirk had just confused the person, he would have corrected himself and then continued enjoying the back rub. Instead he looks embarrassed, as if he said too much. And like you said, it's not really like Spock to massage another man's back like that for no reason, especially if you consider that touch is a sensitive thing for Vulcans.

It just seems oddly intimate for Spock to give a back rub and Kirk seems uncomfortable with the idea of someone else doing it. I'm not sure what else we can possibly read from the scene.

I guess you could read a gay subtext into the back massage, but for me Spock’s explanation in “Amok Time” was believable -- “When I thought I had killed the captain, I found I had lost all interest in T'Pring. The madness was gone.”
Not sure if you’d call this a WTF moment, but what was Bill Theiss thinking when he put the menacing android Ruk in a long bathrobe and pink ruffled nightgown?

It’s a matter of perspective. Look at fashions in history where men wore clothing with ruffles and no one thought anything of it. And men wearing shades of pink is not only nothing new, but still exists today and without any gay connotations.

It often comes down to tones of a colour. I have worn pink hued dress shirts with jacket and tie back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. I’ve seen lots of men wearing pink hued golf shirts and T-shirts. Back in the 1950s cars were manufactured in varying hues of pink. Cadillac had a paint called Dusty Rose that actually looked rather cool in its own way. For the past few years Rose Gold has been popular on MacBooks, iPhones and iPads. You can get a pink new iMac today—I’ve seen it, and while not my first choice of colour it doesn’t look bad.

My biggest WTF moment in all of Trek. How in the ever-loving hell did they get this past the network censors?
Isn't this picture banned on this website? :( :( :(
And I have watched Star Trek for decades and never even thought about this being anything but a weapon until someone mentioned it on this website and now I can't watch this episode without giggling in anticipation.
I told my Trekkie friend about it the other day and didn't believe me - another I've watched Star Trek for decades and would have noticed. Now the picture's on her Twitter account. Maybe she should have #WilliamShatner

I have no idea. I've never heard that it is. If so, the moderators can do what they will and punish me- just not with Kirk's doodad there.

I can't remember when it was I finally twigged to this- I'd seen that episode a million times since I was a kid, but after it finally did, I freakin' howl out loud and fall out of my chair laughing every time it comes on. I'm laughing my ass off as I type this, just thinking about it!
