Wrath of the Lich King Is Out!!!

Now that it is out, we should start discussing it. I started a Death Knight and let me say it is now my favorite class. It combines what I love about Pallies (plate+spells) with what I love about Hunters (pets!). It really feels overpowered at this point because I just tear through everything, though I am only starting on Hellfire Peninsula. I am not going to even touch Northrend until I get my DK to 68 because I don't even want to touch my mage anymore.

One of the cooler touches is that your epic ground mount is free and you get the Flight Points instantly. I was worried about having to discover them all again, but I was happy that I didn't have to do all that legwork.

Great expansion so far!

Me and the hubby got ours at midnight last night. It is pretty cool. We both started a death knight right away. I agree that the mount being free and the talent points being part of the quest rewards is cool.

I didn't stay on the death knight for very long last night though....too anxious to get some stuff done on my lvl 70 characters (2; a mage and a rogue). :bolian:

So far we're both really happy with it.

Thought I was going to wait a bit before picking up the expansion, but I couldn't wait. :p

I'm holding off on rolling a death knight until I level my mage. I loved their quest chain from what I played of it in the beta. Very good use of instancing to tell a story. The end of the quest chain with you heading to what would be your former capital is pretty cool. I did it on a human and a troll. The frost wyrm quest is probably one of my favorites in the game now. Getting your mount and talent points along the way is pretty cool, too.

My brother and I have both been talking about how awesome the new quest areas look. He's still on our old server, and did a couple of instance runs with his soon to be former guildies. The two instances I saw both looked quite nice. Howling Fjord looks great, too. I'm impressed with the new artwork, some of the atmopheric effects, and the new mobs in the game. Especially the Norse looking ones. The detail on some of the new quest rewards looks really nice.

I went to Borean Tundra some in the beta, but didn't do many of the quests there. I didn't want to spoil much for myself when the expansion came out. I did make a pre-made on Murmur so I could use a flying mount to check out some of the new zones. Icecrown looks awesome. Icecrown Citadel reminds me a bit of Minas Morgul. I can't wait to see it from the ground later on.

Luckily, we have some mandatory time off at work, so I was able to get tomorrow off to level up some more and see the new Bond movie.

Tried getting the 10 trial version of WoW just to see what all the hubbub's about.

Not bad enough that there are hours worth of downloads and updates. It's not bad enough that the updater doesn't seem to work for shit and I have to figure out which patches to download manually and in what order. But when I finally get all that shit done and try to log in with the trial account, I get a message saying simply "try again later".

On top of that, my anti-virus is going beserk over a spyware infestation that, no matter how many scans I do, it can't seem to get rid of.

Distinctly unimpressed so far.

I got the expansion the other night... had a queue of over 900+ (!) for my realm. I guess people are coming back to WoW to try it out.

Once I got in though, I had a blast in the lvl 70 starting areas. Why? because there were SO MANY PEOPLE there, it was awesome to be in zones really crowded. Tagging mobs became a bit of an adventure because you were basically competing with other players for kills. Always lively talk, people running around, I loved the chaotic atmosphere of it.

Can't wait to fire up a Death Knight. I played some of it in beta, and the DK Starting Zones are by far the best stuff WoW has done. It's really impressive, so much so that when you get dropped back into "normal WoW" it's a bit of a shock.

Downloading patches is an unfortunate reality for all mmo's. I got a free copy of Anarchy Online that included an entire year of play and I never bothered because as soon as I installed it, it told me I needed several hundred megabytes of patches. (I was on 56k.)

I've gotten the expansion and I've tooled around with the Death Knight a bit. Pretty cool starting zone. I also ran around one of the starting areas and I'm liking some of the new stuff they've added. Like NPC's that will follow you around an help you like pets. Haven't had much time to try out much more.

All I have to contribute to this thread is today's Ctrl+Alt+Del.

from playing through many levels in the beta, you do come across the Lich King fairly early on and it happens a couple times. There is some epic stuff in the expansion, i cannot wait to get to it. i've spent most of my time playing through the death knight zone (and you see the Lich King there all the time). good times!

Debating back and forth whether to get it or not. It gets incredibly boring and repetitive once you hit the level cap and have to start grinding for the better gear, weapons, mounts, etc.

That's not normally a problem except when you can never find a group to do anything. PVP is boring unless you're geared in the latest epics and have no life to master the art of being a total dick so I prefer running dungeons and raids where you have to cooperate and act as a group (where again, PVP fails more often than not). Sadly the main server I'm on where my 70's are has seen a huge exodus of Horde so it's Alliance dominated (something like 3.x-1) so if you're Horde, you're SOL waiting on groups. Even the best guilds have been moving on. And I'm not about to pay $25 a character to move.

I have another server I'm rebuilding on and so far the guild I'm with there is actually active and we have a decent Horde to Alliance ratio so I may stick around. The only two I have there atm are a level 50 Prot Paly and a level 27 Resto Shammy so no rush to jump on WOTLK content yet.

Hello person with no life. I thought it would take a minimum of 3-4 days for someone to level to 80 at a determined pace.

That must be fun, like, to skip all that content just to have bragging rights for 1 or 2 days before everyone else is level 80.

Yeah, to some people it is viewed as a challenge as to how quickly they get to the highest level.

Anyway, I got the expansion last night after school/work and tried the Death Knight for a bit decided to make it on the Horde side (have one 70 Gnome Mage, and one 70 Blood Elf Warlock). I have liked the quest chain for the death knight and how the world actually changes. I didnt get too far with that because I wanted to see some of the newer areas so I hoped onto my Gnome and then onto my Blood Elf. I am liking the starting area for the Alliance more than that of the Horde at this point. Though again, I havent played too much.

There is one benefit for the person that blindly grinds mobs instead of quests, now they can go back and do all the quests and get a lot more gold since they do not get experience for them.

Yeah, I was wondering how quick it would be this time around. IIRC, the first guy to hit 70 was a French guy playing a gnome mage, but he had his entire guild helping him level. He would tag the mobs and they would help him kill them. I think he hit 70 in 28 hours.

There are folks who have fun rushing to level cap. It's never interested me, especially when there's a lot of good content to explore. I prefer to stop and smell the roses.

I do like to level fast but not at the cost of the fun. I prefer to actually do things, not blur past them in a race to get to a certain level by a certain amount of time.

I rolled a Death Knight named Black Mariah (nerd points if you recognize the name), but am focusing on my Paladin first to get to 80. I did have a bit of amusement this morning with the quest where you have to kill the villager when one of them said "I think I pooped!" :guffaw:

Having taken a Death Knight through the initial Ebon Hold quests, I can only echo Eurogamer's gushing thoughts on the experience. This is unquestionably the finest work the WoW team has done to date, and reflects all of the lessons - both technical and creative - Blizzard has learned since the game first launched some four years ago. The new phasing technology allows for a true sense of world and narrative progression without the drawbacks traditionally associated with instancing.

Particular highlights of the Death Knight experience for me:
- The Lich King's initial speech.
- Slaughtering an "unworthy" Death Knight to claim your Rune Blade.
- Stealing, slaughtering, and raising from the dead a Horse to serve as your mount. The sound made by the steed is chilling, very reminiscent of the Ringwraiths in LOTR.
- Thassarian! (connects to an Alliance quest chain in Borean Tundra, where you assist his sister in looking for him.)
- Flying the Ebon Gryphons in battle against the Scarlet Crusade.
- Torturing the New Avalon soldiers for information about the Scarlet Dawn.
- Killing random peasants who flee and beg for their lives.
- Reading the scraps of parchment dropped by said peasants which together constitute a fairly blatant mockery of institutionalised religion.
- Killing a friend who reminds you of your past life.
- The Battle Maidens/Valkyries who resurrect you upon death.
- The Battle of Light's Hope Chapel. (incl. The Ashbringer!)
- Horde/Alliance NPCs insulting, spitting, and throwing fruit at you as you pass.
- The Death Gate, whose awesome and persistent graphic is pure wank, serving only to announce that a Death Knight wuz here.
- Death Grip. There's a real Vader feel to this thing, I feel like making a macro for it, something like:

/cast Death Grip
/em finds your lack of faith disturbing

Mechanically the class is rather complex, certainly moreso than other WoW classes, I'm still getting the hang of it. As Frost at 58, my general attack sequence against three mobs looks something like this:

Icy Touch to apply Frost Fever, Chillblains, and Icy Talons. (cost: 1 Frost)
Plague Strike to apply Blood Plague. (cost: 1 Unholy)
Pestilence to spread Frost Fever/Blood Plague to other targets.
Howling Blast on all targets. (cost: 1 Frost 1 Unholy)
Blood Boil to cause diseases to erupt.
Blood Strike. (cost: 1 Blood)
Death Coil. (cost: 40 RP)
Frost Strike. (cost: 10 RP)

.. and from there I get all confused as RP values wander all over the places and runes start coming off cooldown at different times and diseases start expiring. :o

I'm not sure I'll stick with the class, mostly for thematic reasons. I like Blood with its vampirism, Frost is mechanically interesting with its hybrid melee/caster tools, and I like the general aesthetic, but Unholy with its necromancy theme does nothing for me. A fallen hero atoning for past misdeeds with the only tools at his/her disposal is all well and good, but I've no interest in diseases, raising ghouls/zombies and the like.

Might add some thoughts on the rest of the expansion later, I think I've written enough for now.

I've found the questing in Northrend to be much more enjoyable. They've clustered things really well, and had some unique fun quests, like the one where you get this holy bubble around you and run through an army of zombies (the bubble burning them), or when you have a pet hawk and you sic it on hawks flying in the air, etc. Enjoying it.

What a ball playing with the DK!!! Awesomely stuffed, army of ghouls/worms.
Yes, we heard about the French nolifer who reached lvl80 within 27 hours...

In the Borean Tundra, there's a quest object named "Ultrasonic Screwdriver". I laughed!
