Wow..this dangerous shuttle mission....

What a load of crapola... and with a $1,400,000.00 price tag.

NASA knows its likely to suffer a cutback hit under the Obama Administration... and the way NASA has been run for the last 15 years, I'm, glad they are fearful.

It reminds me of the time NASA thought it crucial to "study the effects of long term space flight" on 77 year old men... in this case a then 77 year old U.S. Senator (John Glenn) who effectively derailed investigations into then Clinton presidential campaign "irregularities".

Sen. Glenn was quite effective doing so, and months later, it became "important" to study these "long-term effects". As such, on STS-95, Glenn became a "Mission Specialist" and spent 9 (NINE) days in space on this mission purported to study these "long term effects" .

NINE days. That's "long-term"?

Had we run out of qualified astronauts in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s?

No.

To date, this was absolutely the most expensive, politically motivated "joyride" in history.

That was then, this is now...

In 2009, NASA is claiming Hubble Service mission terribly "dangerous".

Nonsense.... this is just another example of the politics at NASA.

NASA now fears the current administration budget cuts, so it is "upping the drama" to try and maintain a budget.

This 30 year advocate of manned space flight has just about quit support for NASA.

Why?

NASA is still researching the properties of flame in space and has done so for 35 YEARS, yet has spent precious little research regarding rotationally induced artificial gravity.

How about this NASA?

1. Fire in space, not good. So let's just stop it.

2. Rotationally Induced Artificial Gravity for a manned mission to Mars, good. Let's explore it.

The WASTE in the federal government is one thing....the STUPIDITY in NASA is another thing.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Obama administation just approved budget INCREASES for NASA over the course of the next ten years or so. So the idea that they are ramping up the drama out of fear of budget cuts doesn't really wash. Afterall, risking a collision with a piece of space garbage is pretty dangerous.
