WoW - Musings & Discussion

I think they're just doing that because they said a while back that there wouldn't be a "3.4," IIRC. Adding a new raid seems like a big deal, but if it's on the scale of OS rather than the more enormous ones like Ulduar or ICC I can see why they're not bothering to make a whole new decimal for the patch, like when they dropped nuOnyxia in.

Rogues are getting buffs, which is nice, so I'm waiting so see if the optimal attack rotation will change again. Right now it's basically just apply bleed, Hunger for Blood, Slice and Dice, and then just back and forth between Mutilate and Envenom. The new buffs might put Rupture back into the pattern somewhere.

On a related note, I hit my personal best of 6020 dps in a 20-man raid against Omen last night. :)

^It was never going to come out before this fall or early winter, were you expecting it earlier this year? Given that both previous expansions came out 8 months or so after the last major content patches, I was never expecting Cataclysm to come out this spring or summer.

Blizzcon 2010 at the end of July is going to be ALL about Cataclysm, they'll probably settle the approximate release date then.

They're doing some big pre-Cata stuff in the new patch too; Gnomer being retaken, Echo Isles being claimed, the new raid (they've retconned their past remarks to mean no "big" raids) and removing cooldown timers on a lot of stuff as well as reducing the mats needed for several items.

I'm thinking the major Cata patch 4.0 will be in the early-mid summer with the new expac in the early fall unless they do another patch like 3.3.3.3 or something, then it'll be later in the fall/early winter.

Anyone want to give a brief rundown on anything important happening in WoW these past few months? I stopped playing in early October when I moved to a new city (figured I shouldn't spend my nights at my computer), and am a little afraid to get sucked back in. I was a casual player but loved WoW dearly. I do want to keep an eye on what's happening in the game so I don't get completely lost when I do re-open my account.

I may finally make my return when Cataclysm comes out, the idea completely redone early levels is too amazing to pass up.

I guess the really big thing is Ice Crown Citadel, the final dungeon/raid of Lich King. It consists of 3 regular 5-man dungies and a 10/25-man raid instance. The 5-mans are totally accessible to casual players, which is nice, and the gear drops are sweet. I haven't tried the raid.

There is supposedly going to be a patch in the next few weeks with lots of nice class balance changes.

Yeah, given what Rotface looks like, I wouldn't want to know where it dropped from either.

What I love about WOW are some of the blatant ripoffs from TV/movies. Last night I was watching an episode of "Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost Worlds" and it featured a queen bee. Amazingly, the terrain of the honey combs was exactly like the ones in Ungoro. They were so blatantly identical that I thought I was there....wonder if they pay royalties for these things or if they get by on the satire clause...:rommie:

Of anything, really. The Old Gods are very obvious ripoffs of... well.. Lovecraft. The whole universe is a stew of Dungeons and Dragons, Lord of the Rings, steampunk, and maybe just a tiny little bit of Warhammer (alright, mostly Warhammer).

WOW is a rip off of popular culture. It has the TMNT reference in Dalaran's sewers, the Sega CD shark is there, they did a Lost Hatch in Sholazzar and countless other spoofs/homages/rip offs, etc scattered everywhere.

Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

They're easter eggs and pop culture references.

They have half the cast of Deep Space 9 roaming the Exodar, and I think the goblins standing next to the various transporters have Trek names. The goblins around the big rocket at Area 52 are even wearing TOS uniforms. :)

I do, and it is a combination of ripping off and using pop culture references/inclusions. Anyone who denies they haven't ripped off other material is in denial.

Agreed that there are a lot of references in WoW, but "rip off" is the wrong word. Ripping something off is malicious. These guys put in all that pop culture stuff out of love, appreciation and whimsy. It makes the game much better. :)

i can tell you for a fact that the Dax names in the Exodar are not a rip-off of DS9, but a show of appreciation, a small tip of the hat to a great show.

There can be an argument made about stuff that was ripped off... the only problem is all the stuff you listed were pop culture references and not rip-offs. Hence the quote and the doubting if you knew what the term meant.
