WoW - Musings & Discussion

^Yea, with Cata you will be prompted choose your spec at level 10 then receive talent points every other level after that. They are stripping out a lot of the dead weight talents and giving us less total points to spend.

WOW can also be addicting so keep that in mind. Because it's so diverse in the way you can play it and there's less penalty for "doing it wrong" than other games you'll find yourself playing for more or longer than other games if you really find it entertaining.

The appeal for virtually any kind of gameplay is there (solo, group pvp, raiding, "farming" materials) although soloing is less fun once you reach 80 (and eventually 85) it's still not boring.

I like exploring. How awesome is it to have a huge world where mountains aren't just some artificial wall, where there are chairs you can actually sit in, and little things tucked away for those adventurous enough to actually look in strange, hard to reach places?

I enjoy mining and my other professions quite bit. I like seeing how many creatures I can aggro on my pally without any danger of dying. I actually don't quest a whole lot, so it's not boring because I'm not just sitting killing things for eight eyes/fangs/whatever. There are actually so many zones and quests I've skipped over.

Anyway, my point is that WoW is popular because it appeals to a diverse group of people who enjoy it for a wide variety of reasons.

Yes as I always say, you don't have to play it in a linear fashion. It does not have to be about higher and better everything. One thing I'm enjoying is trying to read all the books in the game for the "Well Read" achievement. This has sent me into many dungeons I might have skipped, some of them are full of books to read. Once you get into the lore tons of stuff opens up to do just because it is cool, not because you get anything.

There are so many ways to play it.. I have a few RP chars and they are great as well.

I'm torn. I want to get my freshly-30 warrior to 80 before Cataclysm...but I also want a Sovereign in Star Trek Online. >.>
Get the Sovereign first, continue leveling your Warrior once Cata hits. You'll definitely enjoy it more in the revamped zones. Also, you're avoiding the rush - less competition. ;)

No it's not! I've only played 20 hours today!

You're crazy. My pally's at 79 and I'm dreading 80. Bunch of geared allies stomping all over me in BGs? No thank you! Also how can you handle two MMORPGs?!

WoW was originally, back in Vanilla, not very friendly to solo play. Many quests marked as 'Group Quests' actually had to be done in groups. Even some quests marked as standard, non-group quests had to be grouped unless you outleveled the quest or you were a suitable OP class (IE - Paladin or Druid for the most part).

Blizzard learned fast that making it easier for everyone to play at all stages was smart for business, and god hasn't that shown to be true for them? I think they're up to 12.5 or 13 million unique subscribers. That doesn't mention the people who have multiple accounts (I have 3 accounts myself).

I think it is a fair thing to say that you can solo everything except for end-game content, especially with the introduction of the new LFG Matchmaking system.

I am an end-game raider, so I usually only log in for raids (Heroic Lich King be damned) and then log out and do whatever around the house.

My Paladin, Alcarius, is my baby. I've had him since BC launched, since my original account wasn't actually mine, but a cousin's who quit 4 months after starting WoW in the Beta.

To be honest, you can play WoW however you want anymore, unless you plan on killing iconic bosses. You need to be in a group, ergo social, to accomplish that, unless you're 20 levels higher than the content's targetted level.

Um...three? I also have an active (lifetime admittedly) account for LOTRO, and I consider that my 'home game.'

Haven't played it too much for a month or so though, since I resubbed to STO.

Besides, I don't PVP, so BGs don't concern me so much.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm in the beta so I know how awesome the revamped zones are. But I'm enjoying her now, and I see no point in putting off enjoyment until later.

Besides, I'm leveling her up via dungeons. Much more fun than the classic quests. ;)

Since I seem to like tanks a lot (my DK main is a tank, my Warrior is prot, my main in LOTRO is a guardian, my highest alt in LOTRO is a Warden, and I'm leveling a survival-oriented cruiser/Fabrication Engineering Officer in STO >.>), I'll probably roll a Worgen Bear Druid in Cata.

Sufficiently geared and specced, many classes are capable of soloing everything up to and including most or all of Karazhan and even Magtheridon. Certain bosses are exempt due to gameplay mechanics of course, some stuff you simply can't solo. BWL, for example.

Hmmm, just thought of something. Wonder what will happen to existing completed and uncompleted quests when the revamped zones go live? Think all of the original questgivers will be moved to new locations or will the quest have to be turned in to someone else?

Most of the uncompleted quests in your log that will lose their objectives, turn-in NPCs etc. will have to be abandoned.

WoW is not meant (i.e. not designed) to be played solo. It's meant to be a social game.

Fact.

That you or anyone else is able to find pleasure in it is just fine for you, but is anomalous and not at all representative of the norm.

So "back at ya" with your "bullshit".

If it wasn't meant to be played solo, then people would be forced into groups for anything.

Soloing is a viable playing option, as long as you understand you won't be able to see and do everything unless you group up.

I don't think there's anything I can add to this picture.

I hope Blizzard comes out with a revised WoW Battle Chest (incl. WOTLK) shortly after Cata launches as I recently sold my account (for no reason other than that I realised that the release of Starcraft 2 marked the last opportunity for me to do so) and will be starting from scratch. Looking forward to the clean slate, my only concern is wrt securing the names I want for my toons.

Well, I hit 80 on my pally. Can anyone give me some advice? Basically I don't want to do dungeons or raids. I'm only interested in battlegrounds. I picked up a piece of PvP gear in Org. with my honor points, and I've started doing WG, but is there anything in particular you guys would suggest for a ret pally? Also is holy any good in BGs? If I ever get the gold, I might dual spec. As far as professions go, I've got BS and JC (not maxed yet) but I'm obviously limited in terms of recipes if I'm not raiding.

Speaking of specs, what are the go to sites for these things? I've found a million builds but I need both a build and a rotation because there's no way I'll work it out myself.

Battlegrounds don't need a spec. Heck, you can just go afk and get your points, don't worry about playing your character at max.

I want to kill as many gnomes as possible! I don't care about points, I just love PvP.

I tried looking at that a few days ago and felt utterly lost.

I'll help, what is your class and spec?

Most of the stuff is just common sense. Go through each tier and put points into what will help you the most. Once you have 5 points in a tier, look at the next one. Is there anything you want to put points in? If there is, put points in it or else put points in a lower tier.

I've been able to come up with some good builds without any research that are pretty close, if not exactly to what the recommended build is.
