Instead of Summer 2011/Summer 2012?

I think it will do better here than going up against the behemoths of summer. I am not saying that Trek itself isnt a (domestic) behemoth but I think that if just one of those wannabee summer movies switched to Christmas then they would make even more money, so why not Trek?

Lots of money can be made at Christmas/New Year. I think Paramount did the right thing moving Trek from Christmas 08 to summer 09 as it allowed a lot of time for the marketing to get into full swing but now that the hard work has been done it can move back to winter/Christmas.

Also the lack of competition will help it overseas.

I don't know. I think I would rather have it in the summer, because sometimes we have bad winters to make it hard to go out to movies. Like I'm glad they decided to move the first film to Summer of '09 instead of Christmas of '08, because we had a pretty bad winter last year.

I agree with you, I like to see the movie sooner than wait longer for it. This time around we wait longer for it, and in the end it was worth the long wait. But now since the new movie did so well, why wait even longer for the next movie? So the sooner the movie comes out the better, but thats me. I'm already ready for the next movie, cant wait for it!

Where did you go to get this information? I already knew some of those movies comming out that year, but I wasnt sure about the others. Anyways I already know what movies I will be seeing that year! There will be so many great movies I want to see already. I plan on seeing: Cars,Spider Man, and of course Star Trek if its out that year.

Just realised MvRojo already made a release date thread so perhaps merge these two?

On subject though... I understand a lower number of movies have made a lot of cash in December compared to May, June and July but I would put that down to the simple fact that far more tentpoles are staked in the summer months than in Winter.

Speaking for us UK forumers and probably for most people in Northern Europe, I don't think summer is the best time of year to release a movie overseas. As soon as there is any good weather the cinema becomes very very low on most people list of priorities so straight away I think there is scope for higher overseas take based on just that. In addition to this though, the lack of competing tentpoles in the winter months means that Star Trek would have many weeks to itself with no viable alternative, Lord of the Rings and Narnia could do it so why not Trek. Even Meet the Fockers did $280 million, do we think it could do the same during a densely packed summer?

Night at the Museum 1 did $250 million in December, Night at the Museum 2 did $175 in a crowded summer. Narnia 1 did $290 million in winter, Narnia 2 did $130 million sandwiched inbetween Iron Man and Indiana Jones - the result is Narnia 3 going back to Winter.

Looking at 2011 not a single movie is scheduled for December, yet 11 big budget movies have already claimed dates in Summer.

Trek can cope with those summer movies domesticly but not overseas where it has just one week to itself and then peoples attention is diverted to a much more established franchises like Potter, Transformers or Pirates of the Carribbean, a winter release ensures the overseas spotlight is on Trek for several weeks! If Winter does indeed mean slightly less domesticly than summer (which I do not believe anyway) then it will be more than made up for in the overseas take.

Then there is the issue of time, it is unlikely they can have the movie ready for Summer 2011 by the sounds of it and so the compromise is Winter 2011, 3 years after the original release date of Trek XI.
