Would you explore the galaxy?

I'd have to say yes, since I'm already often entirely too excited at just the prospect of exploring a city I've never been to before.

It's very much a part of who I am and even my perspective as a writer. I love the unknown, being surrounded by possibility and the prospect of getting hopelessly lost in the world at large for a few hours or more.

I would not expect it to be anything like Star Trek. No alien life around every corner. No universal language translator. No comfort of knowing that a distress signal would be answered. You'd have to give me a REASON to do it first. Exploration for its own sake is just another word for "tourism" and I've always found that rather boring. If, on the other hand, you give me a starship and say "We need a new energy source for our planet" my first reaction is "Give me some space suits and some industrial equipment and I'll see what I can do."

IMO that's something that was always missing from Trek, most notably so in ENT. It's one thing to seek out new life and new civilizations, but one expects you would have some idea what to do with it once you found it.

In all honesty though, it would just be amazing in itself to experience the vastness of the universe, and see how well one could cope with the size of it, to experience places no other human has ever before, to test one's courage against the dangers in deep space, and perhaps lay the foundations for others to join us.

I wouldn't expect it to be like Star Trek either. A universal translator would be nice, but certainly not aliens around every corner.

While I would find that hard to believe considering how vast our own galaxy is, that would suck.

Yeah, that's the kicker isn't it? I'm guessing the OP assumes "a starship" with standard Star Trek capabilities. If that is the case, then sure! If it's not, well then it depends. I don't want to spend the rest of my life traveling to Proxima Centauri using sublight engines.

I like to think my leadership skills are decent (the people who have worked under me seem to have good things to say), but what really would interest me is finding and contacting technically advanced civilizations. The prospect of communicating with them is endlessly fascinating to me - although, without some techno-magic like the UT, it's also a fairly daunting prospect.

When I first posted the question, I did have a starship with standard Star Trek capabilities on board. I figure that eventually we'll have the capabilities of traveling the stars with some kind of engine that will allow us to travel great distances in a short period of time. Now, universal translators? That could be a different story,

Though I would have to give the crew a speech about paperwork and redtape being the only true enemies on my ship. This would be followed by a review of systems that need hardcoded protection (holodecks) and coming up with security procedures that actually make sense.

Yes, I would do it. In a heartbeat. I'd love to explore new solar systems, new worlds, new interstellar phenomena -- and if I'm lucky, meet some intelligent alien life-forms (that are hopefully friendly, of course!). I would do this to increase the scope of my own personal knowledge, and the collective knowledge of humanity... and for the fun, of course.

I'm not sure I'd be cut out to be a captain, but I'd gladly take some position on a starship. I've never really been that scientifically or technologically-minded, but I'd certainly be willing to educate myself in those areas if it meant a post on an interstellar vessel. I want to find out what's out there.
