Would you explore the galaxy?

AdmiralSteven

I think I already know the answer to the question I am about to ask this board, but I’m going to ask it anyways. If you were given a ship to command, fully crewed and all, would you take the opportunity to travel the galaxy and explore? As scary as it would be, I would definitely take the opportunity to explore outside our solar system. As long as the ship I had was more than capable enough to defend itself if needed to. Actually, now that I think about, this is where my question about what ship would you choose comes in, because if I had a choice, I’d want to take Voyager out right now and explore. Call it a fluff thread, but I had to ask. And also to see if I’m not the only one who day dreams about doing this.

I would love it, though I'm not particularly cut out to be a leader, so I'm not sure if I would want to be a captain.

Other than that, I'd jump at the chance. Space is beautiful, majestic, and there's so much to see, even what's probably considered mundane by ST standards in-universe.

i would. if we're talking NOW, i'd spend a year just charting the Sol system and then head out there... Alpha Centauri way...

It's all new to us, so that mundane stuff would be fascinating to me.

It would be whenever you wanted it to be. I'd do it now.

I can't imagine passing up the opportunity, but I can't imagine being up to the task of commanding an entire crew and ship either. It would be an immense responsibility. Can I just man the helm?

Sure, you can be the man at the helm...you can take any position on the ship. I said commanding a ship because that's what I would love to do, but any position would work.

You'd have to give me a REASON to do it first. Exploration for its own sake is just another word for "tourism" and I've always found that rather boring. If, on the other hand, you give me a starship and say "We need a new energy source for our planet" my first reaction is "Give me some space suits and some industrial equipment and I'll see what I can do."

IMO that's something that was always missing from Trek, most notably so in ENT. It's one thing to seek out new life and new civilizations, but one expects you would have some idea what to do with it once you found it.

Oohhh yes.

But if we're talking now-ish, I'd rather do it when we have a faster form of space travel.
If Star Trek... then gimme a Defiant and I'm off! Or a Dominion warship...

I'd love to. I'd even prefer to explore some region far out in the universe in an entirely different super cluster. It would be a truly transcendent experience to actually find another civilization. Think of all the billions of different memes that humans have produced and then imagine the same thing, but in an entirely different life form. Would they have silly entertainments, popular sports, chat rooms, revered scientists and philosophers? To just know what is out there would be too great to pass up.

That's why I'd take a Rhode Island Type NOVA Class vessel. Big enough to get the exploring job done, but small enough so you don't have too many crew officers to worry about.:techman:

Would I? Oh God yes!

The reason as to why? Why simply because we can and I need to know, to know what else is out there, to see what hasn't been seen. Basically to learn MORE :)

Such an experience would be fantastic.

Absolutely! I could be a modern day Magellan or Lewis and Clark or something.

Also, I wouldn't mind doing the opposite and exploring the depths of the oceans. The stuff so deep we have no way of knowing what's down there.

"Space is disease and danger wrapped in darkness and silence..."

That being said, I'd love to see the rest of the Alpha Quadrant and what lies beyond Federation space there.

Mmmm...I'd have to say no; for a couple of reasons:

1) Space is huge; any kind of engine failure and you're knackered, I think I'd suffer from a combination of claustrophobia AND agoraphobia.

2) The Earth contains so many wonders and exotic locations that you don't have to go voyaging in between worlds to fulfil some exploratory need (well I don't anyway).

i could definatly be a captain because im a strong leader and have a lot of respect from my crew. my own sci fi film COSMOSIS proves how much of a good captian i would be because in it i have to make tough desicions and also do physical action scenes at the same time aswell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTs7EyVAcXw
