If you were given the opportunity, would you take on the role as protector of the island? You get to be immortal and you get to live a relatively simple life away from a complicated world, but it's still quite a responsibility. Keep in mind too that you can still visit the mainland. Woud you do it?

I'd just be one of Hurley's followers.
I've always wanted to live on an island in the middle of nowhere. No crowds, no traffic, no phones......paradise! All you have to do is fend off the occasional monster. It would be the perfect job for me!
