Would you accept a flexible Star Trek timeline?

No.

I fucking hate Star Trek.

I don't even know what I'm doing here!

But, at the same time, people that want to treat it as a unified whole shouldn't be silenced or ran out of threads either.

Who is silencing or running out anyone? It’s not a matter of personal preference if you have a tie-in that needs consistent illustrations (like a technical manual or an in-universe history of uniforms). The basic rule is “What would the parent show do?”

DSC Season 1 happens after the Cage so there is no switching.

But Spock’s arrival in Short Treks happens before.

Of course there is no reason to reject anything that can fit easily (mostly in terms of story), but I also want to force inconsistencies out into the open, to see them addressed head-on in terms of tie-ins that do have to use consistent diagrams (unlike novels which can fudge the issue in text).

Ultimately it will become a square peg and a round hole. Largely because of variations in production design and techniques and only fans who worry about such things are trying to force the issue.

Again, the operational authority may be the reason why if we the same variation. In the Cage, we see references to United Earth Probe Agency, and Kirk states they operate under that authority in TOS. So, they might have their own uniform variants that allow captain's discretion.

I see no reason to suck the fun out of the universe. In Star Trek III, they used Franz Joseph diagrams to represent the Enterprise, and we all survived.

That’s just a production error with an obvious fix (don’t do it in a tech manual). However, neither TOS nor DSC are errors and they cannot occupy the same physical reality, so a tie-in must be clear on its parent show.

Most tie-ins already seem to be. Discovery novels/comics are labeled as such and carry imagery from that show, TOS novels/comics are labeled as such and carry imagery from that show.

I said above it would be written from an in-universe point of view (similar to Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, which leaves background notes to italics).
In universe guides are a fool’s errand. Always assured to be obsolete practically before they hit the shelves. Write about the TV show/films not the universe.

Personally, I enjoy the technical manuals and such, but this is absolutely right. Like the proposed Nova-class in the TNG Technical Manual has no resemblance to the Nova-class from Voyager.

But that was just a proposed concept, not a real class. In fact the TNG tech manual is hardly obsolete because it’s not like TNG would go into that much detail on how the transporter works, for example, whereas character interpretations are bound to become obsolete if the parent show takes a different direction (which is what’s been going on with DSC novels so far).
