Would we have watched Voyager if they HADN'T gotten Caretaken?

I think Kim and Chakotay hurt the series at times. Not enough to kill it, mind you, but significantly enough, nevertheless.

While we're comparing VOY and DS9, it is interesting to contrast their approach to "problem" characters.

DS9 had two problem characters in its first season, Dax and Bashir. But it kept trying to fix them for the next three seasons. It didn't always work (Dax, The Passenger, Melora, Life Support, etc) but eventually they figured it out (hello, Hippocratic Oath, Our Man Bashir, Rejoined and The Quickening).

In contrast, VOY realised that Chakotay and Kim weren't working... and then promptly stopped paying any real attention to them. (That said, I think Tuvok is the show's biggest missed opportunity.)

I think I heard Siddig say that he was asked to play three different Bashirs during the series and that he complied each time.

The major problem with Kim and Chakotay were that Wang and Beltran were phoning it in from Day One and never took their work seriously. So the writers stopped caring because they knew that those two would just blow any opportunities they were given (and they did).

They were going to kill off Kim in Scorpion but Wang won some "Beautiful Person" award. And I dunno why they didn't just get rid of Beltran.

They could have disembarked him on one of these "Indian" planets...

Chakotay could have easily been killed off and Tuvok promoted up to First Officer, then the likes of Ayala could've been promoted up to Security Chief--so they'd have a whole new character to work with and develop (though more likely forget about because he's not blonde with large breasts).

Kim should've been axed. He was a go nowhere do nothing character that was basically there to fill a chair, which could've been done by any random extra as Seven took over the analytical side of his job/the script. Kes was a far more interesting character than Kim ever was, she deserved better than a rushed exit and a hash of a special guest appearance.

I heard she developed an allergy to make up and that's why her hair was covering her ears toward the end. So I don't think she could have stayed on the show, even if she wanted to.

I haven't read all the comments but having the Borg involved from the beginning would have been better for me. If by accident.

That's easily written around have her lose the ears as part of the change she was under going.

Yes, but without the ears you'd have to constantly remind people that she was alien. So she would have to do weird things (like eat live bugs) all the time just for that purpose.

With only just reading the initial post, I think it could have been a workable Show without going to the Delta Quadrant. I'm currently reading the New Frontier Books and Although the Excalibur is still in the Alpha Quadrant (or Beta, where ever Sector 221-G is) The ship is pretty much on it's own outside of Federation Territory.

It would have been harder to combine 2 Crews, but for most of the show, that wasn't really an issue. If instead you have Voyager operating on it's own, beyond the Federation, with one or two local Guides (this allows you to introduce the Neelix and Kess roles) you get the same feeling. Instead of a Maquis Crew joining a Starfleet one, you have the Same Maquis Cast showing sympathy (open sympathy in the extreme cases) for their cause. Tuvok could have just returned from an undercover operation, this still being viewed as a traitor by the Sympathetic Crew.

Although in communication with Starfleet, and it being possible that a Ship might come to help, instead of the Allie of the Week, but for the most part, they are on their own.

The Holographic Doctor is harder to explain, since it would be possible to get a new Doctor to the Ship, but maybe to save crew, it was the Long Term Medical Hologram? (from DS9)

And when you get to the Borg, not being in the heart of Borg space might have made Voyager's survival more believable lol I mean, they encountered Dozens of Cubes. I'd have rathered a Voyager version of Wolf 359, with more ships fighting in the encounters. Hell, you could still rescue 7of9 along the way.

So INSTEAD of ears they gave her a cocker spaniel wig, to be alien.

True, only people from another planet would wear a dog on their head.
