Worst lines of dialogue in the entire series?

If the writers wanted to get the message across that someone is a book expert, they would name the character "Liberace" not cast Liberace in the role.

Any more than they would purposefully cast famed Attorney MELVIN BELLI, The King of Torts, to play the Gorgon in 'And The Children Shall Lead?

A LAWYER playing a LAIR?

Tricky thing about those "Stone-age" STAR TREK writers, you have to look all around. Sometimes the clues are in what the characters say, and sometimes in what they do (being two things which do not always work in concert), and sometimes you just have to think real hard about the effort that went into to trying to get you to think for yourself.

Belli was a friend of Roddenberry's if I remember correctly.

CORRECT BILLJ

Ah,.. light bulbs are turning-on,.. connections being made,....

And wouldn't that make sense, to convince him to play in this veiled allegory about the potential and pending resultant disaster as the unknowing innocents (The Children) trusting and following these Lawyers to lead a society,..... a favor between friends,.. of course, who else would?

Go back and watch ATCSL - with THAT understanding,.. flip it around,.. and flip the TITLE,.. And the Lawyers Shall Lead,...

Seems not just prophetic, but 'spot-on' in our overly litigious society of today, where the corrupt with legal power within the SYSTEM (A Roman word for SEWER) are leading the innocent and trusting to their ruin.

Oh, that couldn't possibly be one of those many hidden warnings to the future of mankind peppered throughout the stories, ONE OF THE LEAST LIKED STORIES,.. and not surprisingly MOST MISUNDERSTOOD MESSAGE.

Good connection BillJ,.. You found the KEY.

Keep thinking that way, and you may have to watch the entire series all over again,.. but SEEING it for the first time from the inside out.

But then again,.. maybe those writers were just a bunch of 'Stone-Aged' hacks after all,... as so many on here like to trumpet in unison.

Yes, because Belli would love to appear in a role the plays into the demeaning stereotypes of his profession.

Obviously Memory Alpha has been fooled by some clever deception, no doubt instigated by a lawyer.

Belli was simply stunt casting back then. I think it even got one of those little TV Guide Close-up thingies.

When I saw it in first run, I thought WTF is he doing on this show.

PLEASE do some research if you have no idea about what Melvin Belli was all about,... he passionately fought against corruption in all forms, but especially against corrupt businesses which put forth faulty products to the UNSUSPECTING & TRUSTING.

His dedication to save the innocent from evil businesses and their CORRUPT LAWYERS (Research Dow, Breast Implants, and Belli) killed him financially.

Has nothing to do with lampooning stereo-types, it was what the man was all about if YOU dig into the facts.

Strike two.

Couldn't be stunt casting by the producers, or a father having some fun appearing with his son...

Who Belli is and what he's done isn't really what's being discussed. We seem to have a pretty clear idea, put forth by people who were there, as to why he was cast.

Casting Belli as a corrupter and manipulator of children with nefarious plans to conquer the universe is an odd way to send a subliminal message about lawyers.

When I saw it in first run, I thought WTF is he doing on this show.

That was the intended thought which was to be raised, and jump-start brains into action - but just as in the title MIRROR, MIRROR,... how many completed the question, and sought the answer.

Too few,.. and here were are today - as predicted.

Good cover story that Stunt Casting with the son,.. "Social criticism???,.. no veiled social criticism here,.. why writers only do that with Science Fiction stories."

Whatever happened to the original intent of this thread, which has been completely off the rails for the last five days?

Casting Belli as a corrupter and manipulator of children with nefarious plans to conquer the universe is an odd way to send a subliminal message about lawyers.

To quote: "Fascinating,.. absolutely fascinating."

The hidden WARNING is about who is leading your world,.. again, it is ALLEGORY & PARALLELISM, the tools of Science Fiction writers who want to comment on society, and the future of mankind.

The so-called 'Children' are the innocent, trusting, up-and-coming society-at-large. The so-called 'message' is a veiled WARNING to those children about their future IF they buy into the corruption and lies, and allow themselves to be lead by fpr example,...... Lying Litagators (Perhaps you were not aware that most senators and many congress members are Lawyers too -but they have NO corruption or lies???) The so-called 'Universe' is simply a macro-example of our world.

"Turn the Telescope back around".

And again, those STAR TREK writers ended up right on the money,.... or perhaps you do not live on Earth in 2013?

Or, just follow the spoon fed cover stories, do no thinking, and simply accept the titles, anomalies in ship & character names, terms, character actions, and other inconsistencies only exist by accident, laziness, and coincidence.

And jump on the band-wagon and trumpet about what a bad episode this one is.

Again, anytime something on TOS seems out of place on these shows, is the first place you want to dig,.. it is a trail of bread crumbs leading you to the truth of what the writers were actually trying to say while avoiding the CONTROL AND SUPPRESSION OF THE CENSORS.

And actually see the GORGON for what it is , and what the actual point of telling this story is all about - by thinking it through, doing the research for yourself, not buying into the easy 'cover story', or being distracted by the rubber monster,...and asking the questions when the "What the heck_____" moments appear; again, they are guide posts left behind.

Strike three.

Sorry, Captain. I just can't buy that Edward J. Lakso had those themes in mind when writing the episode. Or that Freddie F had any of that in mind when asking Belli to take the role. I'm sure there are all sorts of ideas and messages in the episode, just not those.
