Worst Character Assassination Episodes

I'm watching the episode. Picard does seem rather grouchy about the Enterprise's "guests", more so than necessary. But, what with the Romulans back and several Federation outposts presumed destroyed, he does have a lot on his plate.

Meanwhile, on topic: just realized Jurati's cold-blooded murder of Maddox, and subsequent annoyance at having to feel bad for a few minutes before just moving on, struck me as a fairly extreme character assassination. This is a man she had an intimate history with! She fully murdered him in a close-up, intimate way! For supporting a cause that she then immediately joined herself, so it was all just a terrible error of judgment!

Jurati was presented as such an upstanding person when we meet her, and to have her so quickly plummet into remorseless, homicidal fool... such a disappointment. I loved her at the start of the season and am just completely revolted with her by the end of it.

I do think they can possibly save it by leaning in and going the cheerful sociopath route with her. Like a sunny version of Emperor Georgiou. Agnes had that one bit in the season one finale, where she's delighted by her capacity for deception, suggesting they might go that way. So maybe what seems now as character assassination will ultimately be part of an interesting arc... we'll see.

Agree. The cheerful sociopath and/or Romulan sleeper agent could work, especially if you read the PIC prequel book. Jurati absolutely seduced Maddox into the appalling prof-student relationship, and he was weak and unprofessional enough to jump on what she dangled - body and mind. Both of them come across as horribly insecure, messed up people with terrible people skills. Still, to me Jurati comes out looking worse -- especially after seducing Rios right after covering up her murder of Maddox.

Do you even like Star Trek?

Sorry Swedish Borg, I'm not trying to be mean, I just couldn't resist.

I try to be tolerant, but there are some times when I just have to look at something and say... "this is crap". These include...
1. Egregiously bad writing ("Threshold", anyone?)
2. Obvious inconsistencies that serve no IRL purpose (Riker refusing promotion gets a pass because he and Patrick Stewart were both popular).
3. Assassinating beloved characters (like Picard), or characters who deserved better (like Harry).

Might have been cute as a "Lower Decks" episode, featuring the Cerritos's cat doctor.

I don't mind a woman showing her sexuality but I just felt that making Crusher an easily seduced woman on some sort of uh, masturbation kick really... haunting , in a different way. I can see why this may come across as character assassination where gender comes into play when they wanted to steam up ST because of competition. Not sure it was intentional though.

Now Riker - I was fine with the in story reason for him turning down a higher position.

Don't insult Lower Decks like that, they'd never do an episode as bad as Sub Rosa :nyah:

Unless you mean a comedic, subversive spin on the episode where some force ghost thing tries to seduce her and she kicks it out. Might work as one of those "before credits" scenes, like the one where Mariner bullied that energy being.

That would be brilliant. Have the Doc eject the thing with a stream of her trademark bleeped out potty words, something like "I'm not some gullible Enterprise doctor!" And then she throws out his lantern after him.

In Way Of The Warrior, Bashir seems worried that Odo might get hurt by batleths... But we've seen many times that it isn't possible!!! In the very first episode, some kind of ball filled with spikes goes through him, without hurting him and ina much later episode Las has a knife put through him and it doesn't to him a thing.
So I find this passage a bit grating... It's like they can't keep from being inconsistent even for things as simple as that.

Did he specifically mention bat'leths? Because some Klingons use disruptors, and we learned in "Crossover" what happens when an energy weapon hits Odo.

We only see Odo fighting off batleths and knives. Plus I believe when Bashir said it that was heavily implied by the context.

And yet, in Vortex, a rock on the noggin can knock him out.

Perhaps he's only immune to physical stuff if he knows it's coming? Not sure if Laas did or not, but then he's more experienced with shapeshifting.
