World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

That ENG performance was utterly awful, no pace, closing down, skill, movement NO NOTHING. and we still win :wtf:

Rooney needs to be nailed to the 18 yard area and we need a midfielder to push up more so we don't need Rooney to drop in the hole. Heskey must start I feel now so Rooney can actually play with someone to play off and Theo must only be a super sub. Fabio really should take Adam Johnson so we have at least one naturally left footer in attack, our team looks unbalanced still.

This would be my 23 Based off the Capello squad picked, which I didn't agree with 100%...

GK - Hart, James, Green
RB - Johnson, Carragher
CB - Ferdinand (c), Terry, Upson, King
LB - A.Cole, Baines
RM - Lennon, Milner
CM - Lampard, Gerrard, Barry, Carrick
LM - A.Johnson, J.Cole
FW - Rooney, Heskey, Crouch, Defoe

If Barry is not fit then I would take Theo and consider Milner for a more central role.

Oh man, I'm terribly uninformed about football these days. I don't even know who the favourites are, I'm guessing Brazil and Spain?

And what are England's chances?

According to the bookies, the 10 biggest favourites are in this order:
Spain - Brazil - England - Argentina - Germany - Italy - Netherlands - France - Portugal - Cote d'Ivoire
but the odds really drop off after Argentina already.

I don't know, I don't believe in Spain, they were fabulous in 2008, but are they still? And England/Argentina always look good on paper, but I just can't get excited about them.
I don't want to root for Brazil and obviously can't root for Germany, so I guess I'll have to go with Italy out of the big favourites. But I still hope one of the Slavic countries does well, doesn't really matter if it's Slovenia, Slovakia or Serbia.

I think am going to revisit my prediction and say England will not make it past the last 16. We are playing just too dam poor and I know Capello will take the likes of Theo who proves hes not a winger while A.Johnson won't be taken because lack of experience even though I'd rather take a chance of someone yet to play properly on this level who could spring a surprise over someone who shows he cannot play at this level on the wing.

Our defence looks slow and old with Terry/Ferdinand and Johnson is too easy to bypass. Green will most likely be number 1 and hes the poster boy for average.

Gerrard unbalances the team on the left and if Barry is not fit we have no solid holding player.

Rooney form is crap and I swear hes not even fully match fit not too mention unless nailed to the 18 yeard box hes never in it.

Defoe form is a shadow of what it was and Crouch can score but makes England look stale when it comes to movement and linking up with fellow attackers.

Going into a World Cup I've never seen such an Ill balanced under prepared team, what a difference 12 months make.

2018 World Cup News and Russia begins a PR war with England...

Lord Coe hailed England’s fans as the best in the world as part of the FA’s campaign to host the finals.
But Alexei Sorokin, head of Russia’s rival 2018 bid, claimed England fans cause trouble all over Europe.

He said: ‘I know Lord Coe well. He is a most decent person. But I do not understand what ‘the best supporters’ mean.

Maybe he meant that English football fans are the utmost hooligans. If that’s so, I am ready to agree and hand over supremacy to them.

“Wherever the English fans travel they create huge problems for the hosts. In this sense they are indeed ‘the best’.

“As for our fans, going to away games they behave well.

This is a nation full of Neo Nazi football hooligans where criminal gangs probably are deep within there games at the money level. Not to mention when they flopped at the last World Cup there own fans rioted back in Russia during Live public screening events.

This is my favourite bit...

Sorokin has claimed “we are in a state of information war” with England.

He said: “In England they keep publishing stuff aimed against us. I must stress that we do not retaliate.”

 do not retaliate.

We are not in the 80's or 90's now, English fans in the LARGE numbers that travel behave very well and hosts tournies love our fans and FIFA/UEFA because we spend the most and bring a good party theme.

Every basket has bad apples but to say Russian fans are more behaved than us is total nonsense.

If Russia gets the bid then I have no doubt a few backhanders will play a big reason this is Russia were talking about.

^^
All true, but I don't see how the quality of the support is a serious argument for having the tournament in one country or another either. ;)

Well Jax, I await your dissection of the England squad. I think it's hilarious Walcott is a 'surprise omission' even though he clearly played badly in both warm-ups! And I guess Warnock must look damn good in training to go based on no playing time at Baines' expense?

Think there was a number of backhanders in 66. Don't you think Jax?

Whoa whoa whoa! .. he didn't play particularly well the rest of the season either! ;) I think he would have been a peripheral player at best if included. "Unlucky Theo!"

It's not a terrible team England are sending. Having watched the Japan game they're not playing particularly well, and it's decidedly unattractive- but you can't infer too much from the pre-tournament friendlies I suppose.

About the England squad I have to say well done for Capello dropping Theo, hes simply been poor and needs to become a out and out forward in the mould of Owen pre 2006 (Theo has a great finish on him we need him in the box more).

I think not taking Adam Johnson is a mistake, ENG lacks flair and also natural balance on the left he could of cured both those problems. Warnock is a big shock having just 1 cap and that came in the summer of 2008. Barry is a big call and even if hes fit will he be match fit ?

I am still calling it for a Last 16 elimination.

My opening team for US would be...

Hart

Johnson, Ferdinand, Terry, A.Cole

Lennon, Gerrard, Lampard, J.Cole

Heskey, Rooney

I don't think we're strong enough to win it, but I still think we'll make the last 8. The last two games haven't been great--yet we did win them both (sign of a good team, play shite and still win) plus Capello's England do seem to up their game when the match actually matters rather than being a friendly.

I fear we don't have the strength in depth to really win it, but luck and confidence can take you a long way so never say never.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that whenever a new England manager is announced the first thing that happens is that Emule Heskey gets a hold of some incriminating photos.

WTF, why is he going at Bent's expense? 25 goals in a mediocre team against 3 goals in a very good team?

There was a stat on the BBC yesterday;

Heskey - 58 caps 7 goals
Rene Higuita (Columbian GK) - 68 caps 8 goals
Jose Luis Chilavert (Chilean GK) - 74 caps 8 goals

There's no way on earth he'll start ahead of Crouch, we can only hope that the human newborn foal remains injury-free.

SWP in ahead of Adam Johnson? Again, WTF?

And Carrick! Why the fcuk is Carrick anywhere near the England squad? His biggest achievement last season was to single-handedly get Man United knocked out of the CL.

Seriously, fcuking mental.

We'll still make the SFs though. :)
