World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

I pity you fools who live in countries that have national teams that can actually play football. I on the other hand am completely free to switch around my allegiance any time and wherever I want. :D

Don't headbutt me. :(

I cordialy hate you ;)

The world cup isn't about sport, like Iguana said, it's about something else and you need to be with the locals to know that :)

No offense, I wish England the best (it's always fun when they are doing well), but that's extremely optimistic imo. Yes, England will probably get to the 1/8 finals, will probably even win their group, but none of the opponents in that group are push-overs (remember that Slovenia beat Hiddink's Russia in the play-off for example!). And I'm still convinced the Serbian team could achieve greatness in this World Cup. You can only hope Capello doesn't think the same as you.

I'm confident largely because I know that when push comes to shove Capello won't let the team be over-confident ;)

Seeing how we stormed through qualification, and given the relative strength of our group, providing that Capello keeps the squad grounded we should walk it.

We also have nothing to fear from Germany's group. Whether we end up playing Germany, Serbia, Australia or Ghana, doesn't matter.

QFs is a bear minimum.

Well in terms of england I think we have a good chance of doing better than the Erickson era, as for my predictions for the group well;

England 2 -0 USA
England 1-0 Algeria
England 0-0 Slovenia

for other teams i fell that Chile may be a surprise for some people with there all out style of attacking football which maybe fun to watch especially Sanchez on the left wing,

Ivory Coast will have the best hope out of all of the african teams but judging on how they did in the african cup of nations + sven who hasnt really had any involvement with the team as manager will result in underachievement. plus they are in a group of death and will be battling portugal for the runners up spot saying that portugal did draw with the cape verde isles the other night.

and the Netherlands may also be dark horses to get to the semi finals.

Capello seems less god like now though I have to admit with that display against the Mexicans and his refusual to not move Gerrard off the left and get Rooney right up front. If he wants 2 upfront Heskey must start because without him Rooney has stopped scoring. Also Lennon over Walcott is a must now after saturday.

He's in my FM2010 Udinese team. Annoyingly flaky just now! ;)

i can see Gerrard as a partner for rooney as if were gonna have Rooney as no1 striker you need someone who is fast.

Great isn't it?

Lots of people insist the Welsh support England. Ha. They can sod right off. I will be entirely neutral and watch every game. Well, except...

ANYONE BUT ENGLAND :)

I'm optimistic about the USA's chances, but from what I've heard, their lineup isn't as good as it could be. But I love watching the World Cup no matter who's playing (though the Italian team really bothers me for some reason--no offense, iguana!), so even if the Americans don't make it too far I'll still enjoy the tournament. :techman:

And some people wonder why Americans don't like soccer.

And the answer is......

1) You're no good at it, therefore it must be rubbish

2) You can't cope with 'world' meaning 'global' rather than just 'North America'.

3) Your lack of attention span means that you can't cope with stop-start, even though American football is about as stop-start as you'll ever get.....

No prizes for guessing, it's all three. :techman:

Kind of like the misconception that the English are ambivalent towards the fortunes of the Scottish. Coasting through a group stage of a world cup isn't quite the same if Scotland aren't dying on their arses at the same time.

^ Its weird because I feel and know from experience that barring affecting us in any manner English fans support the other home nations + Ireland more than any of the others when to coems to our matches.

I would love all the UK teams + Rep.Ireland to qualify and I got so into the playoff with France last year and also during the run in for Euro 2008 when Scotland and N.Ireland came so so close to making it too. Not too mention Wales in 2004 q/f for Euro.

seems odd or maybe us English are nicer than people would like to admit ;)

I support Scotland through qualification.

The prospect of them being knocked out by Mozambique or Botswana is too appealing to want them to not qualify!

We can't be TOO terrible since we seem to qualify regularly

2) You can't cope with 'world' meaning 'global' rather than just 'North America'.
Yet the Olympics remain popular

3) Your lack of attention span means that you can't cope with stop-start, even though American football is about as stop-start as you'll ever get.....
Baseball games can last far longer than soccer games. It's one of the few major sports without a clock

No prizes for guessing, it's all three. :techman:
No, it's probably none of those. Sometimes shit just happens

We can't be TOO terrible since we seem to qualify regularly

Yes. One wonders how you ever managed to navigate such a powerful group as Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago.

Yet the Olympics remain popular

Indeed. Congratulations to China on their triumph. Although according to certain American broadcasters, the US topped the medals table because all of a sudden, apparently, it was determined by the total number of medals won, rather than the number of golds.....

It also makes Cricket look interesting, which usually takes some doing.

No, it's probably none of those. Sometimes shit just happens

It's the world sport, and you're never going to be the best at it. It's as simple as that. But hey, you're in good company though, neither will we! :techman:

My predictions..

USA will come 2nd in the group. Loses to Germany in the round of 16. Coach Bradley is fired by the US Soccer Association and replaced with none other than Raymond Domenech.

England to the Semis after beating Les Bleus on a Thierry Henry handball own goal in which the official refuses to overturn despite the line judge's advice.

Maradona will snort some good shit and then demand Messi to play goalkeeper for their match against Deutschland.. In the match Messi will score the Hand of God goal Mk. 2 which knocks out Germany. Maradona will then admit in a press conference that Messi is one of his many illegitimate love children.

Brazil will play like Ze Germans and advance to the final quietly and efficiently. In the final game they'll be dominated by Spain but wins the cup on penalties because Pique hit the crossbar after seeing Zlatan Ibrahamovic hugging another man in the crowd.

Qualification is still qualification

Well, I have no idea as to what you are talking about here. Either way, it has no impact on my statment

Again, whether you like it or not has nothing to do with my point (or your claim)

No, it's probably none of those. Sometimes shit just happens

I never claimed we were. Then again, we aren't the best at baseball either and yet it still remains popular in the United States so, again, that isn't an reason for soccers lack of popularity in the United States.

Of course, that being said, there has been a steady rise in popularity of the sport. For some reason however, it's played by alot of people up until high school, at which point people stop playing

We'd give money to get rid of Domenech...
