World Cup 2010 - South Africa Thread

Makes you wonder how fit Ferdinand was? He did spend most of the season out, and by all accounts hasn't been in great form so this might not be a huge disaster (just don't like Emile anywhere near Rooney!)

This didn't have anything to do with Rio's fitness, this was a freak injury from a tackle...DAM OUR LACK OF LUCK

I don't care about Essien, but too bad about Drogba, Cote d'Ivoire was my African hope for the tournament; now the refs will have to work extra hard to ensure South Africa's success...

I drew Ivory Coast in the office sweepstakes about 3 minutes before we heard Drogba got injured. Bah.

Actually we drew 3 teams each. So my hopes rest on Serbia and South Africa. What a waste of money.

Just thought I'd pop into this thread to whinge about our comical collapse starting already. Of all the crappy things to happen, and to all the players they could happen to. By the time the USA actually walk onto the pitch, they'll be playing the D-team. "In goal tonight for England is Fred Biggles, retired from New Milton Athletic in 2001"

Emule's more dangerous to his own team mates than the opposition.

Fcuking donkey.

Who's next on his hit-list? Crouch? :lol:

Re the Crouch vs Heskey stats;

In terms of goals scored while they were on the pitch, the stats are as follows;

Heskey - 58 caps 7 goals 71 team goals (35 by strikers)
Crouch - 38 caps 21 goals 54 team goals (38 by strikers)

Seems to me that Crouch is the better option either way.

well if we want statistics to use against heskey;

Chilivert has scored more goals for Paraguay than Heskey has done for england, which is a pretty fun statistic seeing that chilivert was a goalkeeper

Someone on BBC showed some stats that there are three international goalkeepers with better scoring records than the Hesk!

Well, while that pretty funny, and 7 goals in 57 games is certainly a terrible statistic for a forward, these goalkeepers' statistics are boosted by kicking penalty shots and at least in the case of Chilavert direct freekicks also. It's easier to score lots of goals if you're the guy who does that and I'm assuming Heskey doesn't have that standing in the English national team.

I'm not going to be able to follow the World Cup as closely as I'd like since - as ever - it's being broadcast here on a channel to which I have no access. :scream: So once again I'm reduced to highlight packages on the news. Grrrrrr.

Anyway, this morning we got some context for our apparently very flat performance in the friendly against the US the other day: The team had just learned our third-string keeper was leaving for home after his four-year-old son was diagnosed with leukaemia. :( Hopefully FIFA will permit a replacement in such (horrible) circumstances. As Lucas Neill said in the press conference it's put the event in perspective for our blokes.

The Kewell injury saga - yet another Kewell injury saga - drags on and on. It almost doesn't matter, really, because Tim Cahill is the one who's crucial to our chances. If anything happens to him we may as well leave South Africa immediately.

Even though I won't get to watch it I can't wait to see how the tournament pans out.

Anyone watch Soccer Aid ?

Was great fun and wow that shootout went on forever though never seen so many kicks go over the bar :lol:. Hope refs are better in WC though, robbed of 2 pens but I was surprised at the level some fo the celebs were playing at :techman:

I stopped watching when it became clear Zidane wasn't going to be nutting James Corden. It was pretty fun though.

I drew Serbia in the office sweepstakes - so I'm officially backing them. Money is at stake.

Anyone else noticing how many players are getting crocked at the 11th hour? It's absurd. Every time I go on the BBC website someone else has dropped out.

It is somewhat worrying!

Well I caved in and got myself a fantasy team via the Telegraph's website. Virtually impossible to win these kinds of things but it's made more interesting by splitting all the entries up into seperate 32 team leagues as well.

It's weirtd but I wasn't very excited before but the last couple of days I've started to get quite excited about it all.
