Work related question.

I have worked for a supermarket in scotland for 5 years now and I only have 2 days on my contract so that means i'm only obligated to do 2 days a week.

I declined a shift on wednesday due to that not being my contract day and me having plans only to be met with the knowledge that since i'm declining this shift that i've to get no more overtime or cover shifts ever. Bear in mind that I graduated a year ago and have been jobhunting so in this meantime the overtime is pretty much what sustains me.

Can they do this? Or am I right to feel victimised?

Well, a contract is a contract...being obligated to only work two days a week works both ways, sorry to say. If your contract doesn't stipulate that you should receive x amount of overtime or cover shifts, you're not really in a position to expect them.

Of course, this is only my opinion.

Might be a good time to accelerate the job-hunt.

I honestly don't know as I dont know the laws in scotland but I think in the US giving overtime is at the will of the employer, soI do think they have the right to deny you overtime if they choose to. Another factor is if you have a union or not and what the unions agreement with the company has to say

You're not a victim. You aren't helping them out. Why should they help you?

Have you done overtime for them before, recently?

If I have already-made plans on a particular day and my boss asks me to do overtime, I have been known to turn it down, particularly if it's at very short notice. No one can possibly be available to work all day, every day.

I'd have to agree that who to offer overtime to is entirely the choice of the employer. Have you worked overtime for them before? Is it the decision of who gets overtime decided by one manager? You might want to talk to him. Unless it is a company rule it seems petty to deny someone overtime ever again for declining one day.

I work overtime every single week and have declined shifts in the past, suddenly it's become a problem and i'm being denied it in the future. Others decline shifts and nothing is said.

I do realise that they don't have to offer me overtime but I was on the rota for shifts for the next fortnight and they've been taken off me because I declined one day. They just don't seem to understand that I have a life outside of the place.

Sounds like a good reason to find another job.

Consider yourself lucky, I got terminated from a temp. position because I wouldn't cooperate when they went from 40 hours/week to every day except alternating Sundays because of a backlog.

Believe me I would find another job if I could.

It's not exactly the best climate for finding work at this present moment.

I loathe the place but can't find another job.
